Chapter 7

The predawn light struggling through the high Gothic windows of the corporate boardroom cast long, eerie shadows across the polished granite conference table. Around the room, seven members of the Vance Global Logistics board of directors sat in dead silence, their expressions severe and unyielding. At the head of the table sat Julian, wearing his dark grey suit, his posture rigid and authoritative. Amy sat quietly in a corner armchair, holding a sleeping Lily close to her chest, while Eleanor stood near the far window, completely isolated from the rest of the group.

Marcus Thorne stood beside a digital projector screen displaying a chaotic graph of plummeting stock values and depleted reserve accounts.

"As you can see from the forensic audit completed three hours ago," Marcus announced, his voice echoing in the vast room, "the four million dollars transferred from the primary reserve fund was routed through three different shell companies before landing in an overseas holding account exclusively controlled by Eleanor Vance."

A murmur of disbelief and outrage rippled through the seated directors. One of them, an elderly man named Henderson who had served alongside Arthur Vance for decades, slammed his hand onto the mahogany table.

"Unbelievable," Henderson growled, glaring at Eleanor. "Arthur built this company on integrity, and you tried to gut it from the inside out while pinning the blame on an innocent young mother who was literally nursing her newborn in your kitchen."

Eleanor turned slowly from the window, her dark dress rustling softly. Her face was a mask of cold fury, refusing to show a shred of remorse.

"You are all fools," Eleanor spoke, her voice calm, chillingly composed. "If I hadn't moved those funds when I did, the hostile takeover bid by Sterling Enterprises would have stripped every last asset from this company by Monday morning. I was protecting the Vance legacy, not stealing from it."

Julian stood up slowly, pushing his chair back with a soft scrape against the floor. He walked toward the front of the room, stopping just a few feet away from his mother.

"Don't talk about legacy, Mother," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "You didn't protect anything. You used corporate funds to cover your private gambling debts in Monaco, debts you’ve been hiding from this board for over two years. We found the wire transfer receipts linked to your personal Swiss accounts in the study safe."

Eleanor flinched, the first genuine crack appearing in her iron facade. Her eyes darted toward Julian, filled with a sudden, searing hatred. "I gave you everything you have, Julian. I molded you into the man running this company. And you stand there siding with an outsider who brought nothing into this family but debt and breeding."

Amy flinched at the cruel insult, tears springing to her eyes, but she refused to cower. She shifted Lily gently in the carrier and looked directly at Eleanor, finding a quiet strength she didn't know she possessed.

"I brought my daughter into this family," Amy said, her voice clear and steady in the quiet boardroom. "And unlike you, I didn't have to lie, cheat, or steal to earn my place here."

Henderson nodded approvingly, looking toward the head of the table. "The motion to strip Eleanor Vance of all executive voting rights and initiate formal criminal proceedings for embezzlement and fraud is on the table. Julian, as acting CEO, it’s your call to execute."

Julian looked at his mother for a long, agonizing moment, weighing a lifetime of emotional manipulation against the cold dictates of justice. He raised his hand to sign the resolution, but before the pen touched the paper, the boardroom doors slammed wide open, revealing a frantic security guard breathless and pale.
