Chapter 10

The heavy steel shutters sealed the boardroom with a final, echoing metallic thud, trapping Julian, Amy, Eleanor, Marcus, and the terrified board of directors in an airtight tomb of crimson light. The emergency backup generator hummed faintly behind the paneled walls, providing just enough power to keep the ventilation running, though the air quickly grew stifling.
Julian rushed to the sealed shutter, slamming his fists against the reinforced metal. There was no handle, no keypad on the inside—it was designed to withstand a direct blast, controlled entirely from the sub-level bunker where Charles Vance supposedly waited.
"There's a manual maintenance hatch behind the projection screen," Marcus Thorne whispered, his voice trembling as he fumbled with his glasses in the red glow. "Arthur installed it during the Cold War. It leads to the old utility service shaft."
Julian immediately spun around, grabbing a heavy brass floor lamp from beside the conference table and hurling it through the fabric of the projection screen. Behind the torn canvas lay a small, rusted steel door half-hidden behind velvet drapes.
"Marcus, Henderson, help me with the latch," Julian ordered, throwing his weight against the rusted metal handle.
With a screech of protesting iron, the utility hatch popped open, revealing a pitch-black vertical shaft plunging downward into the bowels of the building, illuminated only by a faint, blinking green service light far below.
Amy stepped forward, her face pale, holding Lily securely against her chest. "Julian, we can't go down there. We don't know where it leads."
"It leads to the sub-level bunker," Julian said firmly, taking Amy's hand. "It's our only way out of this room. Charles and Mother have locked us in to force us to sign over the remaining equity. If we stay here, we lose everything—including our lives."
Eleanor remained seated at the head of the conference table, her dark dress stark against the crimson light. She did not attempt to join them; instead, she crossed her arms and watched with cool detachment.
"Go ahead, Julian," Eleanor called out smoothly. "Crawl down into the dark like the rats you both are. You will only find that your uncle has been waiting for you for a very long time."
Julian ignored his mother. He slipped through the utility hatch first, testing the rungs of the metal ladder bolted to the damp concrete wall. Once he confirmed it was stable, he reached back up to help Amy descend into the abyss, ensuring Lily was strapped tightly and safely against her mother's chest. Marcus and Henderson followed closely behind, their heavy breathing echoing in the narrow shaft as they climbed down into the underground chill.
For ten agonizing minutes, they descended through the subterranean infrastructure of the old headquarters. The air grew damp and smelled heavily of ozone and old dust. Finally, Julian's boots hit solid concrete flooring at the base of the shaft.

He pushed open a heavy fire door marked Sub-Level 4: Restricted Archive, and stepped cautiously into a cavernous underground chamber lined with glowing server racks and vintage computer terminals.
Standing in the center of the room, illuminated by the cold blue light of a dozen mainframe monitors, was a tall, silver-haired man wearing an immaculate black overcoat, turning slowly to face them with a hauntingly familiar smile.
