Chapter 12

The metallic click of the revolver’s hammer being pulled back echoed sharply through the cavernous server room, cutting through the low hum of the cooling fans. Eleanor stood in the doorway, her dark dress slightly wrinkled, her graying updo coming undone with loose strands framing her pale, furious face. Her hand was steady, the small silver barrel aimed unyielding at Charles’s heart.
"Put the drive down, Charles," Eleanor commanded, her voice vibrating with suppressed rage. "You didn't survive Marseille just to hand my company over to a couple of ungrateful children."
Charles didn't flinch. He didn't even lower his arm. Instead, he smiled, turning slowly to face his former co-conspirator with absolute calm.
"You always were dramatic, Eleanor," Charles said smoothly, taking a deliberate step closer to the gun barrel. "You think you can shoot me down in our own basement and walk away clean? The security cameras in this archive feed directly to an off-site federal mirror server. The moment you pull that trigger, the murder charge goes public alongside your embezzlement logs."
Julian reacted instantly, throwing his arm out to pull Amy and the baby behind a thick concrete pillar near the server racks. "Mother, drop the gun! Have you completely lost your mind?"
"Stay out of this, Julian!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking for the first time. Her eyes were wide, filled with decades of suppressed bitterness and betrayal. "You don't understand what I sacrificed to keep this family afloat while he was hiding in the shadows! He didn't come back to save us, Julian. He came back to burn it all down!"
Marcus Thorne shrank back against the wall, holding his briefcase in front of his chest as if it could stop a bullet. Henderson closed his eyes, muttering a silent prayer.
Charles chuckled, a dark, raspy sound. "She’s right about one thing, Julian. I didn't come back to save you. I came back to reclaim what was stolen from me. But unlike Eleanor, I'm willing to share the spoils with the future generation—provided they have the stomach for it."
Charles tossed the small flash drive across the concrete floor. It skidded across the smooth surface, stopping right near Julian’s polished leather shoe.
"The proof is right there, Julian," Charles said, keeping his eyes locked on the barrel of Eleanor’s gun. "Pick it up. Plug it into the terminal behind you. Exonerate your wife, take the company control codes, and leave your mother to deal with the wreckage she created."
Julian looked down at the small piece of plastic resting near his feet. He knew that picking it up meant entering a pact with a devil who had faked his own death and manipulated an entire dynasty for decades. But as he looked over at Amy, whose eyes pleaded silently for an end to the nightmare, he realized there was no clean way out.

He bent down slowly, his fingers brushing against the cold plastic of the flash drive.
Suddenly, the red emergency lights overhead flickered off entirely, plunging the sub-level into absolute, pitch-black darkness, followed immediately by the terrifying sound of a gunshot ringing out through the vault.
