Chapter 6

The heavy brass knocker of the front door banged against the oak panels with authoritative repetition, drowning out the lingering echoes of Lily's cries. Eleanor hurried down the grand corridor, her dark dress sweeping the floor with a sharp rustle, desperate to regain control of the escalating chaos within her home. Detective Miller signaled his officers to stay back, his hand resting cautiously on his weapon as they followed the matriarch toward the foyer.

Julian kept his arm firmly around Amy’s waist, guiding her away from the study threshold and toward the warmth of the grand staircase. The night air blowing in from an open window sent a shiver through the hallway, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant pine trees.

Eleanor threw open the heavy oak door, her stern expression hardening even further as the porch light illuminated the visitor standing on the marble steps.

It was Marcus Thorne, the senior managing partner of Vance Global Logistics' legal counsel, looking thoroughly disheveled in a heavy trench coat despite the late hour. His graying hair was windblown, and his briefcase was clutched tightly in his gloved hands.

"Eleanor," Marcus said breathlessly, brushing past her without waiting for an invitation. "Thank God you’re still awake. We have an absolute catastrophe on our hands."

Julian stepped out from the hallway shadows, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the corporate attorney who had served his grandfather for over thirty years. "Marcus. What are you doing here at midnight?"

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks as he saw Julian, Amy, and the police officers gathered in the foyer. He swallowed hard, his eyes darting nervously between Eleanor and the badge on Detective Miller’s uniform.

"I received an automated system alert from the main corporate server an hour ago," Marcus explained, his voice strained. "The primary reserve account... it’s been drained. Four million dollars was moved offshore using a master override signature that hasn't been active since Arthur Vance passed away."

Eleanor’s face went chalk white. For the first time all evening, her legendary poise completely fractured. "Marcus, shut your mouth. You don't know what you’re talking about."

"I know exactly what I'm talking about, Eleanor," Marcus shot back, pulling a thick Manila folder from his briefcase. "The security protocol required two-factor authorization. One key belonged to the primary executive—which is you—and the secondary key was generated using a device registered to the household network. The system logs point directly to this address."

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling out his notepad with a heavy sigh. "Well, it looks like my jurisdiction just expanded from a local domestic dispute to a federal white-collar investigation. Everyone stays right where they are."

Amy looked up at Julian, her eyes wide with a mix of vindication and profound terror. "Julian... the thermal printout in the study. It wasn't a coincidence."

Julian nodded slowly, his gaze locked on his mother, who stood frozen near the door, her hands trembling against the fabric of her dark dress.

"No, Amy," Julian said quietly, his voice cutting through the foyer like ice. "It wasn't a coincidence at all. Mother didn't just try to frame you for data theft; she tried to use you as a human shield while she robbed her own company blind."

Eleanor’s eyes flashed with venomous rage as she realized her elaborate trap had completely imploded upon her. She took a step toward Marcus, her voice dropping into a dangerous hiss. "You ungrateful fool. After everything I did to keep this firm afloat after Arthur died, you turn on me over a routine asset adjustment?"

"Asset adjustment?" Marcus scoffed, slamming the folder shut. "You liquidated the pension fund reserves, Eleanor. The board is already convening an emergency meeting for sunrise. And they aren't going to look at Amy when they demand answers."
