Chapter 8

The rain began to fall in heavy, relentless sheets, turning the asphalt of the city’s industrial district into a mirror of neon lights and flashing police cruisers. Federal agents and internal affairs officers formed a tight perimeter around Rossi’s Salvage Yard, a sprawling labyrinth of rusted metal, crushed sedans, and high-security storage containers.
Maya Vance stood near the command van, wearing a tactical rain jacket over her burgundy blazer, holding a encrypted radio as she coordinated the entry teams. Captain Raymond Vance stood beside her, watching the operation unfold with a heavy heart. Seeing his precinct dismantled piece by piece was painful, but necessary.
"Team one, breach the main office," Maya ordered into the radio.
A loud, concussive bang echoed across the salvage yard as the heavy steel door of the office was blown open by the tactical unit. Shouts of "Federal agents! Show me your hands!" drifted through the damp air.
Within minutes, two handcuffed individuals were led out of the office, their heads down against the driving rain. Inside the building, investigators began unearthing physical evidence: forged vehicle titles, cash counting machines, and ledgers detailing months of illegal vehicle seizures.
Suddenly, a frantic voice crackled over the tactical frequency. "Agent Vance! We have a runner heading toward the rear perimeter fence near the shipping containers!"
Maya didn't hesitate. She sprinted toward the southern edge of the yard, her tactical boots splashing through puddles of oily water. As she rounded a stack of rusted shipping containers, she spotted a familiar figure scrambling over the chain-link fence—Officer Thomas Miller, out of uniform, wearing a dark hoodie and clutching a heavy duffel bag.
"Stop right there, Miller!" Maya commanded, drawing her service weapon and leveling it with absolute precision.
Miller froze halfway over the fence, looking back with wild, desperate eyes. He had lost his badge, his uncle was currently being questioned by federal prosecutors, and his entire life had collapsed. In a moment of sheer panic, his hand dropped toward his waistband, where the outline of a firearm was visible beneath his hoodie.

"Don't do it, Thomas!" Captain Vance shouted, rushing up behind Maya with his own weapon drawn. "It's over! Put your hands on the fence!"
Miller’s breathing came in ragged gasps. He looked at Maya’s steady gun, then at his captain's pleading eyes. The defiance slowly drained out of him. With a hollow, defeated sound, he slid down the chain-link fence, raised his empty hands into the air, and dropped to his knees in the mud.
