Chapter 5

The hallway outside the precinct captain's office was quiet, save for the muffled shouting coming from behind the frosted glass door. Deputy Chief Robert Miller was a heavy-set man with graying hair and eyes that had seen too many compromises over a thirty-year career. He slammed his palm onto Captain Raymond Vance’s desk, rattling the stack of incident reports.

"You want to fire my nephew over a broken car window?" Deputy Chief Miller roared, his face turning a deep, angry crimson. "Are you out of your damn mind, Ray? It’s a property dispute! We pay for the glass, we write a letter of reprimand, and it gets buried in the personnel file by Friday!"

Captain Vance sat calmly behind his desk, not flinching at the outburst. He had known Robert for two decades, but the man’s blatant nepotism and defense of bigotry had long crossed the line.

"He didn't just break a window, Robert," Vance said evenly. "He targeted a federal agent. A Black federal agent who was standing next to her own legally purchased vehicle. He didn't ask questions; he made assumptions, acted with malice, and abused his authority."

"She’s a fed, so what?" Robert scoffed, pacing the small office like a caged bear. "They think they own the city anyway. Thomas made a mistake. Cops make mistakes under stress. You're going to ruin a young man's life over bruised pride?"

"Bruised pride?" Vance stood up, his own temper finally flaring. "He committed a felony, Robert. The FBI’s internal corruption unit is already pulling his entire jacket. If you try to cover for him, they won't just take his badge—they’ll indict you for obstruction of justice right alongside him."

The deputy chief stopped pacing. The anger in his eyes flickered, replaced briefly by cold calculation. "You think they’re really coming after him?"

"They're not coming after him, Robert. They're already here."

As if on cue, the office door clicked open. Maya Vance stepped into the room, her burgundy blazer buttoned, her expression absolute granite. Behind her stood two federal agents in dark suits, their expressions unreadable.

"Deputy Chief Miller," Maya said, her voice cutting through the heavy air of the office. "I’m Agent Vance. We need to talk about your nephew’s arrest record, and more importantly, the financial transactions flowing through his personal bank accounts over the last twenty-four months."

Robert Miller froze, the color draining from his face as he realized this was no longer about a broken car window. It was an unravelling.
