Chapter 12

Two weeks after the incident, the autumn air had grown significantly colder, carrying the unmistakable chill of an approaching winter. Maya Vance parked her newly repaired black Lamborghini in the exact same spot on Fifth Avenue, directly in front of the classical stone facade of the public library.

She stepped out of the vehicle, wearing her trademark burgundy blazer over a white blouse, grey trousers, and black heels. She carried her maroon handbag over her shoulder, her gold watch catching the amber glow of the streetlamp just as it had on the night that changed everything.

The street was peaceful. Passersby walked briskly along the sidewalk, wrapped in heavy coats and scarves, paying her no mind. A municipal patrol cruiser rolled slowly past, its headlights sweeping across the stone columns of the library. The officer behind the wheel glanced over, offering a polite, neutral nod before continuing down the avenue.

Maya nodded back, a quiet sense of closure washing over her. The systemic issues plaguing the city’s law enforcement agencies were far from resolved—one investigation could not cure decades of institutional rot. But accountability had been established, a corrupt network had been shattered, and a powerful message had been sent across the department that badge numbers did not grant immunity above the law.

She adjusted the strap of her handbag, feeling the familiar, reassuring weight of her federal badge resting inside. It wasn't just a symbol of her career; it was a reminder of her responsibility to protect those who couldn't protect themselves against those who abused the power entrusted to them.

As she stood there for a moment, absorbing the calm evening atmosphere, she thought about Thomas Miller sitting in a federal holding facility, awaiting sentencing. She felt no malice toward him—only a profound, sober sadness for a man who had traded his integrity for cowardice and greed.

Maya turned and walked up the stone steps of the library, the doors opening automatically before her as she stepped into the warmth within.
