Chapter 8 - The Badge At The Door

Julian opened the front door just as the heavy pounding threatened to splinter the oak frame. Two local police officers stood on the porch, their uniform jackets dark against the swirling red and blue light of the cruiser parked in the gravel driveway. The older officer, a weathered man with graying temples and a gold badge pinned to his chest, rested his hand near the holster of his service belt.

"Mr. Julian Vance?" the officer asked, his tone flat and professional.

"Yes," Julian replied, standing tall in the doorway, blocking the view of the dark hallway behind him. "Is there a problem, Officer?"

"We received an anonymous tip regarding an unregistered minor residing on these premises, along with allegations of child endangerment and financial fraud," the officer stated, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket. "We have a court-ordered welfare check and a warrant to inspect the property."

Clara appeared behind Julian, her demeanor instantly shifting into one of distressed vulnerability. She touched her cream blouse, her voice trembling slightly as she addressed the officers.

"Thank God you're here," Clara said, managing to force a convincing tear to the corner of her eye. "My husband has been holding us hostage in this house for days. He threatened me when I tried to contact child services about the boy."

Julian shot Clara a look of pure venom, but he kept his voice controlled. "Don't listen to her, Officer. She's fabricating the entire story to cover up her own illegal activities regarding this estate."

"Save it for the station, Mr. Vance," the officer interrupted, stepping past Julian into the foyer. "Where is the child?"

From the shadows of the stairway, a small voice broke the tension. "I'm right here."

All eyes turned toward the stairs. Leo stood on the third step, his white t-shirt hanging loosely over his small frame, his hazel eyes blinking against the harsh glare of the flashlights held by the officers. The younger officer stepped forward, his expression softening instantly as he looked at the pale, fragile boy.

"Hey there, buddy," the officer said gently, kneeling to Leo's eye level. "What's your name?"

"Leo," the boy whispered, clutching his wooden car tightly.

"Leo Vance?" the officer asked, looking back over his shoulder at Julian and Clara.

Before Julian could answer, Clara stepped forward, her voice sharp and ringing with false authority. "No. His name is Leo Miller. And he doesn't belong to this family at all."
