Chapter 2 - Echoes In The Hallway

Julian slammed his hand onto the marble countertop, making the silverware rattle against the plates. The sharp sound echoed through the quiet house, causing Leo to flinch from his hiding spot near the stairs.
"Don't play games with me, Clara," Julian growled, leaning across the island so his face was inches from hers. "My attorney didn't just call about the divorce settlement. He called about the adoption papers. The ones you told me were filed six years ago."
Clara didn't blink. Her blue eyes remained ice-cold as she looked down at the brown envelope. "Maybe they were filed. Maybe they weren't. You were too busy with your investments and your late nights to notice whose name was actually on the birth registry."
Julian's breath hitched. A dark flush crept up his neck, contrasting sharply with his dark beard. "He's my son. He looks like me. He has my mother's eyes."
"Biological markers don't mean a damn thing in a court of law, Julian," Clara retorted sharply, her voice cutting through the tension. "Especially when the mother on record isn't me, and the signature on the surrender form was forged by your late brother."
Leo pressed his back against the wallpaper, his small hands gripping the hem of his jeans. He didn't understand all the big words, but he understood the jagged tone of their voices. It sounded like glass breaking inside his chest. He backed away slowly, his bare feet making no sound on the runner rug, retreating deeper into the shadows of the hallway where the light couldn't reach him.
In the kitchen, Julian snatched the brown envelope off the counter, tearing it open with trembling fingers. He pulled out a sheaf of heavy paper, his eyes scanning the typed paragraphs with frantic speed.
"This is a lie," Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "My brother died before Leo was born. He couldn't have signed anything."
"Couldn't he?" Clara smiled, a bitter, humorless expression that didn't reach her eyes. "David was always better at forgery than you were, Julian. And he left you a parting gift. Go on, read the last page. The part about who actually owns this house, and who Leo's real mother is."
Julian’s hand shook as he flipped to the final page, his pupils dilating as he read the signature at the bottom.

"No," Julian breathed, staring at Clara in absolute horror. "That's impossible."
