Chapter 4 - Broken Porcelain

Downstairs, the sound of breaking porcelain shattered the tense silence of the kitchen. Clara stood over the fragments of a shattered coffee mug, her cream blouse stained with dark brown liquid. She didn't bother to clean it up. Her hands were shaking as she stared at the basement door, which stood slightly ajar, letting up a draft of damp air and the faint scent of old earth.

She walked over to the island, picked up the phone, and dialed a number she had memorized years ago. It rang four times before a gruff voice answered on the other end.

"It's me," Clara said, keeping her voice low and frantic. "Julian found the attorney's packet. He knows about the trust fund, and he's up in the attic with the boy right now."

"Calm down, Clara," a man's voice rumbled through the speaker. "He can't prove anything without the original deed. And you have the key to the safety deposit box."

"I had the key," Clara corrected, her voice rising in panic. "I checked the drawer an hour ago. It's gone. Julian must have taken it from my coat when I was serving dinner."

A heavy curse echoed through the phone line. "Find it. If he unearths what happened to his brother, we lose everything. The house, the accounts, the insurance payouts. Everything."

Clara slammed the phone down onto the cradle, her chest heaving. She hurried to the hallway, looking up the dark staircase that led to the third floor. She could hear the faint murmur of voices—Julian talking in low, soothing tones, and the occasional sniffle of the boy. Anger flared through her veins, hot and bitter. She marched toward the basement door instead, pulling a brass key from her pocket. She unlocked the heavy deadbolt, swinging the door wide to reveal the steep, dark concrete steps leading down into the darkness.

If Julian wanted to dig up the past, she would give him a grave to crawl into. She reached inside the entryway, flipping the switch for the basement lights. Only the top bulb flickered on, casting long, twisting shadows down the stone walls.

"Julian!" Clara called out, her voice echoing unnervingly through the hollow frame of the house. "Come down here and talk to me like a man, instead of hiding in the dust with a bastard child!"

Upstairs, the voices stopped abruptly.
