Chapter 14 - The Final Stand

Julian didn't flinch. He kept his eyes locked on Clara’s cold blue gaze, noting the slight tremor in her hands—the only sign that her iron facade was beginning to crack under the immense pressure of the moment.

"You can't shoot me in cold blood, Clara," Julian said, taking a slow, calculated step forward. "The whole county police force is already aware of the audit. If I don't walk out of this basement in ten minutes, Detective Miller and his deputies will tear this house down to the foundation."

Clara’s jaw tightened, the barrel of the rifle wavering just a fraction of an inch. "They won't find anything incriminating. Just a tragic accident involving an estranged husband who tried to break into his own storm cellar in the middle of the night."

"And the boy?" Julian asked, his voice sharp and steady. "What happens to Leo when the state realizes you murdered his father and held him hostage for a fraudulent trust fund?"

"The boy was never part of the equation," Clara hissed, her voice rising in pitch as panic finally broke through her composed exterior. "He was just an insurance policy. A tool to keep the estate from reverting to the state until the statute of limitations ran out."

"He's my nephew," Julian said fiercely, closing the distance between them with a sudden, explosive burst of movement.

As Clara pulled the trigger, Julian lunged to the side, the deafening crack of the rifle shot echoing violently through the confined stone walls of the cellar as the bullet splintered the wooden shelf behind him. Before she could cycle the bolt for a second shot, Julian slammed his shoulder into her midsection, tackling her hard against the concrete floor.

The rifle flew from her hands, clattering across the floorboards into the darkness. Clara thrashed beneath him, scratching and clawing with desperate fury, but Julian pinned her arms firmly to the ground, pressing his weight down until she stopped moving, gasping for air against the cold stone.

Footsteps pounded down the wooden stairs above them, followed by a loud, authoritative voice echoing through the basement.

"Police! Drop your weapon and step away!"
