Chapter 4 - The Traitor Within

The harsh fluorescent lighting of the hotel security office hummed monotonously as Clara, Officer Miller, and a pale, trembling Julian were corralled into the cramped space. On the main monitor, the security footage from the rear service corridor played in looping, silent high-definition. A figure in a dark hoodie could be seen hastily exiting the freight elevator, clutching a laptop and a thick manila envelope identical to the one found in the vault.

Julian stared at the screen, his mouth agape, color entirely draining from his face. "No," he whispered, shaking his head in frantic denial. "That's impossible. That's Marcus."

"Marcus Vance?" Officer Miller asked, tapping his pen against his clipboard. "Your chief financial officer and best man?"

"He handles everything," Julian stammered, running his bloodied hands through his disheveled hair. "All the wire transfers, the off-shore accounts, the legal structuring. If Marcus turned, he didn't just expose me—he has the keys to every single hidden asset we accumulated over the last five years."

Clara leaned against the edge of the metal desk, crossing her arms over her white wedding dress. A cold, dark realization washed over her. "So the grand plan wasn't just your embezzlement, Julian. Marcus was setting you up to take the entire fall from the very beginning, wasn't he? He was going to drain the accounts, pin the forgery on you, and disappear to South America with Elena."

Julian snapped his head toward her, his eyes wild with betrayal and fear. "Elena? No! Elena didn't know about Marcus! We were partners!"

"Partners?" Elena’s voice cut sharply from the doorway as she was led in by a female officer. She wasn't trembling anymore; her posture was rigid, her expression ice-cold. "Julian, you were a useful idiot. You had the charm to marry the heiress, but you didn't have the stomach to finish the job. Marcus understood that business requires cold efficiency."

Julian stared at his mistress as if seeing a monster for the very first time. "You bitch. You planned this with him while we were planning the wedding?"

"Of course we did," Elena said smoothly, sitting down in the metal chair without being asked. "You really thought a girl from my background was going to settle for being the mistress in a cramped suburban townhouse? Marcus promised me half of the liquidated estate. All we had to do was let you take the blame when Clara inevitably started asking questions."

Clara watched the two of them tear each other apart with a strange, detached numbness. The man she had loved, trusted, and nearly married was nothing more than a pawn in a much larger, greed-driven game. But before she could speak, Officer Miller’s radio crackled to life with a burst of static.

"Unit Four to Sergeant Miller," a panicked voice came through the speaker. "We checked the perimeter security logs. Marcus Vance's vehicle didn't go to South America. His car was just found abandoned on the harbor bridge—and the driver's side door is wide open."
