Chapter 14 - The Final Confession

Three weeks later, the high-security federal holding facility on the outskirts of the city smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee. Clara walked down the long, echoing corridor flanked by two armed guards, her heels clicking sharply against the polished concrete floor. She stopped in front of Cell 12, where a single small window looked into the stark, gray interior.

Inside, sitting on the edge of a bolted steel cot, was Elena. Her dark hair was unwashed and pulled back into a messy ponytail, her freckles stark against her sunken, hollow cheeks. She wore an orange jumpsuit that swallowed her frame, looking nothing like the triumphant woman who had sneered across the Grandview Ballroom.

Clara motioned for the guard to step back, then slowly pushed the heavy steel door open. The metallic squeak echoed loudly in the small space.

Elena looked up slowly, her eyes bloodshot and swollen. When she saw Clara standing in the doorway, dressed in a sharp black trench coat, a bitter, broken laugh escaped her lips. "Come to gloat, Clara? Come to see what’s left of the woman who stole your husband?"

Clara didn't flinch. She stepped into the cell, stopping just a few feet away from the cot. "I didn't come to gloat, Elena. I came to ask you a question."

Elena stared up at her, her jaw tightening defensively. "Ask away. I've already told the feds everything. Julian was a coward, Marcus is a traitor, and I’m going to spend the next twenty years rotting in a federal penitentiary."

"Why?" Clara’s voice was remarkably soft, devoid of anger or malice. "You came from a good family, Elena. You had a degree, a career, a future. Why throw all of that away just to be a pawn in Julian's embezzlement scheme?"

Elena looked down at her hands, her fingers trembling slightly. The defiant mask had finally cracked, revealing the hollow desperation underneath. "Because I was tired of watching people like you inherit the world while people like me had to scrape for scraps. Julian promised me power. He promised me a seat at the table where the decisions were made."

"And instead, he used you as an alibi and left you to take the fall," Clara said quietly. "Power isn't something you steal, Elena. The moment you built your life on someone else's lies, it was already doomed to collapse."

Elena didn't answer. She simply turned her face toward the concrete wall, tears finally spilling over her lashes in silent, unstoppable defeat.

Clara stood there for a moment longer, watching the person who had tried to destroy her life reduce herself to a ghost. Then, without another word, she turned around, walked out of the cell, and closed the heavy steel door behind her.
