Chapter 13 - The Ashes of Deception

The sun had fully risen over the city, casting a brilliant, golden wash across the polished glass and steel of Sterling Enterprises. The emergency board meeting had concluded with the formal resignation of all remaining directors and the reinstatement of Jonathan Sterling as rightful Chairman and CEO.
Down in the subterranean parking garage of the corporate headquarters, the morning air was crisp and quiet. Officer Miller leaned against the side of his unmarked cruiser, watching as a pair of forensic investigators loaded boxes of confiscated documents into the back of a van. Clara stood beside him, holding a steaming cup of black coffee between her hands, her tailored gray suit immaculate despite the sleepless night.
"So," Miller said, taking a sip from his own paper cup. "What happens to the wedding venue?"
Clara offered a faint, dry smile, staring down at her ringless left hand where the heavy diamond band had once been. "I think I’ll send them the catering bill for the appetizers. After all, nobody really got to finish dinner."
Miller chuckled quietly, shaking his head. "You know, in my twenty years on the force, I've seen a lot of revenge plots. But walking down the aisle, stepping on your cheating husband's mistress, and taking down an entire corporate syndicate before noon? That’s a new record."
"I didn't plan any of this," Clara said softly, looking out toward the rising sun reflecting off the harbor bridge in the distance. "I just wanted a quiet life with a man I thought loved me. They were the ones who turned my life into a battlefield."
"And now?" Miller asked, his expression turning serious. "What are you going to do with the empire?"
"Rebuild it," Clara replied without a moment's hesitation. "From the foundation up. No forged signatures, no shell companies, no secrets."
A sleek black sedan pulled up smoothly beside them, and the rear door opened. Jonathan Sterling stepped out, looking stronger than he had the night before, though the lines of exhaustion still lingered around his eyes. He walked over to his daughter, placing a gentle hand on her arm.
"The federal prosecutor just called, Clara," Jonathan said softly. "Julian’s estate has been seized, Elena and Marcus are in custody awaiting arraignment, and the board has dissolved entirely. We have our company back."
Clara turned to her father, a genuine, radiant smile touching her lips for the first time in years. "Not just our company, Dad. Our life."

Miller pushed off the side of the cruiser, touching the brim of his hat in a respectful salute. "Well, Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling... I'll let you two get to work. My paperwork isn't going to write itself."
