Chapter 9: The Laser’s Edge

The small red dot flickered against the fabric of the man’s charcoal suit jacket like a tiny, malevolent eye. Before Mark could even issue a warning, the man reacted with terrifying speed, tackling Mark and Lily to the damp concrete floor just as a suppressed crack echoed down the narrow utility tunnel. A spark of white-hot heat flared against the brick wall right where the man had been standing a fraction of a second earlier.
"Down! Stay down!" the man barked, drawing his pistol once more and rolling toward a rusted pipe junction that offered minimal cover.
Mark wrapped his entire body around Lily, shielding her small frame beneath him as another round ricocheted off the iron bulkhead door with a high-pitched whine. The confined space amplified every sound, turning the subterranean corridor into a deafening echo chamber of violence.
"Are there more of them?" Mark shouted over the ringing in his ears, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
"They anticipated our route," the man in the charcoal suit muttered, peering around the rusted pipe and firing two controlled shots down the dim corridor. The sharp muzzle flashes illuminated the dark tunnel in strorobe-like bursts. "Someone inside the agency compromised the extraction protocol."
Mark felt a surge of pure rage cut through his terror. He was just an ordinary civilian who wanted to raise his daughter in peace. Now, his life had been hijacked by invisible forces playing a deadly chess game underground.
"I'm done running," Mark said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register as he shifted Lily slightly behind a concrete pillar. "My daughter is getting hurt. Tell me how to end this right now."
The man glanced back at Mark, his gray eyes appraising him with a new level of respect. "End it? The only way this ends is when the ledger is recovered and secured. And the asset—your runaway bride—is the only one who knows the decryption key."
"Where is she?" Mark demanded.
"Holding cell at the federal transit depot, two miles north," the man replied, ducking as another bullet sparked off the overhead pipes. "If we can reach the subway platform before their backup arrives, I have a transport waiting."
"Then let's move," Mark said, scooping Lily back into his arms with adrenaline-fueled strength.

The man nodded, laying down a suppressing volley of fire down the corridor before motioning for Mark to sprint toward a rusted service ladder set into the brick wall at the end of the tunnel. Mark bolted forward, his shoes splashing through puddles of stagnant water, his lungs burning with every inhalation of stale air.
He grabbed the rungs of the metal ladder, hoisting Lily up first into the dim glow of the subway station above, just as a heavy explosion rocked the tunnel behind them, sealing off their escape route forever.
