Chapter 5: The Unseen Watcher

The blinding glare of the black sedan’s high beams forced Mark to squint, his arm instinctively tightening around Lily to shield her eyes from the sudden luminescence. The vehicle idled smoothly against the curb, its tinted windows rolled up tight, blending into the shadows of the tree-lined street outside the chapel’s side exit. Mark froze, his heart pounding against his ribs as adrenaline surged back into his veins. He had thought escaping the chapel meant leaving the chaos behind, but the danger clearly extended far beyond Sarah’s immediate deception.
"Daddy, who is that?" Lily asked, her voice trembling as she buried her face against Mark’s black tuxedo shoulder.
"Stay close to me, honey," Mark murmured, taking a slow step backward toward the heavy metal door of the chapel.
Before he could reach the safety of the building, the rear passenger window of the sedan hissed downward with a mechanical hum. A gloved hand emerged from the dark interior, holding a bulky manila envelope stamped with a red, urgent classification mark. The hand didn't move or gesture; it simply held the envelope out into the open air, waiting for Mark to approach and claim it.
Mark hesitated, his instincts screaming at him to run back inside. Yet, an overwhelming, morbid curiosity rooted his feet to the pavement. "What is this?" he called out, his voice cutting through the hum of the car engine.
"Take it, Mark," a distorted, synthesized voice replied from inside the vehicle, sounding metallic and devoid of any human emotion. "Sarah was only the decoy. You have no idea who you were actually about to marry."
The statement hit Mark like a physical blow. A decoy? If Sarah—or whatever her real name was—was merely a distraction, what kind of spiderweb had he accidentally stumbled into? He slowly stepped forward, his boots crunching on the loose gravel, and snatched the envelope from the gloved hand. The moment his fingers gripped the heavy paper, the car’s window snapped shut, the tires shrieked against the asphalt, and the sedan accelerated rapidly down the street, vanishing around the corner in a cloud of exhaust.
Mark stood alone on the deserted sidewalk, his chest heaving. With trembling hands, he tore open the flap of the manila envelope while still holding Lily securely with his other arm. Inside were several glossy photographs and a thick stack of printed financial documents.

He pulled out the top photo, and the breath caught in his throat. It wasn't Sarah in the picture. It was a completely different woman with dark hair, standing in front of an upscale corporate office—a woman who looked strikingly, terrifyingly similar to Eleanor, yet bore a security badge with a completely different last name and a title denoting high-level federal security clearance.
Mark flipped the photo over, and on the back, written in bold, handwritten red ink, was a chilling warning that made his blood run ice cold: "She isn't a runaway bride. She’s an active intelligence asset, and you were chosen to be her cover."
