Chapter 15: The New Dawn

The harsh morning sunlight poured through the open doorway of the federal transit depot, glinting off the polished barrels of the assault rifles held by the tactical agents blocking the exit. Mark stopped dead in his tracks, pulling Lily tightly against his chest, while Sarah instinctively stepped back, shielding her face with her hands as the familiar dread returned in full force.

"Drop your weapons! Federal Agents! Do not move!" the lead tactical operative shouted, his voice echoing authoritatively down the sterile white hallway.

"We are unarmed!" Mark called out clearly, holding his empty hands high in the air while keeping a firm, protective grip on his daughter. "We have the decryption key and the asset! We are surrendering voluntarily to internal oversight!"

The lead agent hesitated for a fraction of a second, lowering the barrel of his rifle by a few inches as he recognized Sarah standing behind Mark. He tapped his comms headset, murmuring a rapid status report to an unseen superior.

Most civilians would have panicked and died in the first ten seconds."

Mark glared at the operative, his anger flaring hot beneath the surface. "So this was all a test? You weren't a rogue agent?"

"A stress test of the highest order," the man corrected calmly, nodding toward Sarah. "We needed to know if she was willing to sacrifice her own life to protect you and your daughter, and we needed to know if you had the backbone to survive in a world you were never meant to enter."

"I never wanted to enter this world," Mark said coldly. "I want my life back. I want my daughter safe, and I want out."

"And you shall have it," the man replied, pulling a small, secure tablet from his briefcase and holding it out toward Sarah. "Input the decryption key, Sarah. Secure the ledger, and your slate is officially wiped clean under federal witness protection. You will be relocated where no one will ever find you."

Sarah looked at the tablet, then slowly turned her head to look at Mark and young Lily. The silence between them stretched for several agonizing seconds—a heavy, silent goodbye f
