Chapter 4: The Closing Circle

A tall police officer in a pressed navy uniform stepped through the heavy wooden doors, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs loosely in his right hand. The bright midday sun caught the badge pinned to his chest, casting a sharp reflection across the empty pews. The entire chapel seemed to hold its collective breath, the illusion of the fairy-tale wedding completely shattered beyond any hope of repair.

"Sarah Jenkins, you are under arrest for grand larceny, identity theft, and desertion of an injured party," the officer announced, his voice echoing authoritatively against the stone walls.

Mark stepped back from the altar, putting a protective arm around Lily as the reality of the situation washed over him. Sarah—not Eleanor—watched the officer approach with narrowed eyes, her posture stiffening. The woman in the trench coat let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, while her scarred brother leaned heavily on his cane, his shoulders dropping as if a massive, crushing weight had finally been lifted.

"You can't prove any of this," Sarah snapped, her voice losing its sweet melodic cadence, replaced by a harsh, defensive edge. "Those bank transfers were legal gifts. We had an arrangement."

"An arrangement that included forging signatures while your husband lay unconscious in a hospital bed?" the officer countered, walking steadily down the aisle. "We have the digital paper trail, Sarah. And we have your former landlord confirming your identity."

Mark stared at the woman he had loved, feeling sick to his stomach. He thought about the past six months—the romantic dinners, the shared laughter, the plans they had made for their future, and the way she had seamlessly bonded with young Lily. It had all been an elaborate, calculated performance designed to latch onto a new, unsuspecting life before her old one caught up with her.

"Daddy, I want to go home," Lily whispered, her small fingers clutching the fabric of Mark’s jacket.

"We're leaving right now, sweetheart," Mark replied softly, his voice steady despite the turmoil raging inside his mind. He turned his back on the altar, refusing to look at Sarah one last time.

As Mark scooped Lily up into his arms and began walking down the side aisle toward the exit, Sarah’s desperate voice pierced the heavy air.

"Mark, wait! You don't know the whole story! They forced me into this!" she cried out, taking a frantic step forward.

The officer immediately stepped in front of her, raising a hand to halt her movement as the metallic click of handcuffs being unlatched echoed sharply through the room. Mark didn't turn around. He pushed open the side exit door, stepping out into the cool afternoon air, believing the nightmare was finally over.

He was dangerously wrong. As his foot hit the pavement outside the chapel, a black sedan idling by the curb flashed its high beams directly into his eyes, and a muffled voice from inside called his name.
