Chapter 8: The Breach

Upstairs, the grand living room was a scene of frantic chaos. The heavy double doors leading to the front veranda stood wide open, letting in a chilling gust of autumn wind that whipped through the room, making the crystal pendants of the chandelier chime like delicate warning bells. Eleanor stood frozen near the shattered remains of a decorative side window, her royal blue evening gown sweeping the glass-strewn floor. Her hands were pressed to her face, her chest heaving as she stared out into the dark, rain-slicked gardens.
Andrew burst into the room seconds later, his eyes darting wildly across the empty space. “Eleanor! What happened? Who was out there?” he demanded, rushing to her side and grabbing her arms.
“I don't know—I saw a shadow against the glass,” Eleanor stammered, her voice shaking violently. “Someone was watching us. They smashed the window and ran toward the gate. Andrew, we’re not safe here. This house... everything is falling apart.”
Before Andrew could respond, a heavy thud echoed from the foyer, followed by the slow, deliberate creak of floorboards. Someone had entered the house through the broken window.
Andrew’s protective instincts, usually reserved for his wealth and social standing, suddenly shifted to genuine physical survival. He pushed Eleanor behind him, his tall frame tensing as he scanned the shadowy corners of the vast living room. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, instinctively searching for a phone to call security, cursing himself for leaving his device on the mahogany desk in his private study.
Down in the basement quarters, Clara had just ushered the twins toward the back service stairs when the distant crash of glass echoed down to them. She stopped dead in her tracks. The fragile plan to sneak the boys back upstairs unnoticed was instantly ruined. If someone had broken into the mansion, the entire estate was locked down in a state of emergency.
“Clara, what's happening?” Julian whispered, clutching the crayon drawing of *Our Real Mom* tightly to his chest like a shield.

“Stay right behind me,” Clara instructed in a fierce, hushed tone. The maternal instinct that Andrew had so cruelly dismissed earlier flared up with blinding intensity. She grabbed her leather suitcase in one hand and reached down to take Leo’s small, trembling hand with the other. “We are going up, but we are going quietly. We need to find your parents and get to safety.”
As they crept up the narrow service stairs, the heavy atmosphere in the mansion felt electric, charged with impending danger. Clara’s mind raced. Who would break into an upscale estate in the dead of night? Was it a common burglar, or something far more sinister tied to Andrew’s high-stakes corporate dealings? Whatever the answer, the pristine, untouchable world of the Harrison family was crumbling into dust, and the maid and two little boys in white pajamas were right in the epicenter of the wreckage.
