Chapter 6: The Midnight Flight

The muffled sound of Andrew’s booming voice echoing down the service stairwell sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through the small room.
“Julian! Leo! Where the hell are you?!” Andrew’s angry shouts ricocheted off the concrete walls, sounding much closer than they had a moment ago.
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. She grabbed her leather suitcase off the bed and snapped the latches shut with trembling fingers. There was no time for gentle goodbyes, no time to explain the harsh realities of the adult world to two eight-year-old boys who only wanted to be loved. Survival demanded immediate action.
“Listen to me very carefully,” Clara said, grabbing both boys by their shoulders and looking directly into their terrified eyes. Her voice was firm, urgent, but laced with absolute tenderness. “Your father is coming. You must run back upstairs right now, sneak down the hall, and pretend you were in your bedroom the entire time. Do not let him see you down here. Do you understand?”
“No! We want to go with you!” Julian sobbed quietly, fresh tears spilling down his pale cheeks. He grabbed the fabric of her black-and-white dress again, refusing to let go. “You can't leave us alone with him, Clara! He's mean, and mommy doesn't talk to us!”
“I have to go, Julian,” Clara said, her own voice breaking as she fought to keep her composure. She gently peeled his small fingers away from her dress. “If I stay, it will only make things worse for everyone. But I promise you, I will never, ever forget you. You are in my heart forever.”
Footsteps were heavy on the metal steps outside the door now. *Clank, clank, clank.* Time had run out.
With desperate urgency, Clara pushed the boys toward the small closet in the corner of the room. “Hide in here! Just for a minute, until he passes the hallway. Please, for me.”
Reluctantly, wiping their eyes with their pajama sleeves, the twins squeezed into the cramped darkness of the closet just as the heavy wooden door of Clara’s quarters was shoved violently open.
Andrew stood in the doorway, his tuxedo jacket wrinkled, his chest heaving as he scanned the sparse room. His furious eyes landed on Clara, who stood defensively in front of the closed closet door, her leather suitcase packed and sitting on the bed.
“Where are they?!” Andrew demanded, taking a threatening step into the room. His voice was a whip crack in the small space. “I know they came down here. Don't lie to me, Clara!”

“They aren't here, Mr. Harrison,” Clara lied, her voice remarkably steady despite the terror gripping her soul. She stood her ground, blocking the view of the closet entirely. “I was packing my things, just like you ordered. I haven't seen your sons.”
Andrew glared at her, his eyes narrowing with deep suspicion. He took another step forward, his towering frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over her. He looked around the tiny room, his gaze lingering on the narrow bed, the single chair, and finally locking back onto Clara’s defiant, tear-stained face. The air between them crackled with suppressed hostility, a silent battle of wills fought in the damp basement air.
