Chapter 7: Shadows in the Basement

Andrew’s gaze swept over the cramped quarters, lingering suspiciously on the closed door of the small wall closet behind Clara. The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the hum of the overhead lightbulb and the sound of Andrew’s heavy, deliberate breathing. He took another step forward, closing the distance between them until Clara could smell the faint scent of expensive cologne mixed with the bitter edge of his alcohol-fueled anger.
“Move,” Andrew commanded quietly, his voice a low, threatening hiss.
Clara didn't budge an inch. Her heels remained firmly planted on the concrete floor. She knew that if Andrew opened that closet door, the consequences for the boys—and for her—would be catastrophic. He would likely pull them upstairs by their arms, screaming and crying, and blame Clara for manipulating them even further. She had to hold the line, no matter the personal cost.
“There is nothing in that closet except my winter coat and a few spare hangers, Mr. Harrison,” Clara said, her voice betraying none of the absolute terror churning in her stomach. She looked straight into his dark, furious eyes, matching his hardened expression with a quiet, unyielding dignity. “You told me I had twenty minutes to pack and leave your property. I am packing. If you are looking for your sons, perhaps you should check the nursery where they were supposed to be sleeping instead of invading the staff quarters.”
Andrew’s jaw tightened so hard it looked as though his teeth might crack. The audacity of a dismissed maid talking back to him with such fearless composure clearly stunned him. For a terrifying second, Clara thought he might lash out physically, his hand twitching at his side. The deep emotional tension in the room felt thick enough to suffocate them all.
Just as Andrew raised his hand to push her aside, a sudden, muffled sound came from upstairs—a distant crash of breaking glass followed by Eleanor’s panicked voice echoing through the ventilation shafts.
“Andrew! Andrew, come quick! The front window—someone’s outside!” Eleanor’s voice shrieked, laced with genuine terror.
Andrew froze. His head snapped toward the ceiling, his priorities violently shifting. The threat from the outside world instantly eclipsed his domestic war inside the basement. He glared at Clara one last time, his eyes promising retribution.
“This isn't over,” Andrew warned viciously. He spun on his heel, abandoning his search of the room, and bolted out the door, his heavy footsteps pounding furiously back up the service stairs.
Clara let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding, her knees instantly going weak. She grabbed the edge of the metal bed frame to steady herself. Without wasting a second, she rushed to the closet door and pulled it open.

Julian and Leo tumbled out into the room, their eyes wide with fright. They had heard everything.
“You heard your mother,” Clara said quickly, crouching down to grab them by the shoulders. “You have to go back upstairs right now, through the back hallway, while they are distracted. Go straight to your room and stay there. Please.”
