Chapter 10: The Turning Point

The intruder took a slow, menacing step toward Clara and the twins, the heavy iron poker glinting under the crystal chandelier. “Step aside, sweetheart,” the man sneered, his eyes fixed on the frightened boys huddled behind her apron. “Unless you want to take the first hit.”

Clara didn't flinch. Instead of retreating, she slowly set her leather suitcase down on the marble floor with a quiet thud. She reached behind her, gently pushing Julian and Leo further back into the safety of the dim service hallway corridor, putting her own body squarely between the threat and the children.

“You want the safe?” Clara’s voice rang out, remarkably steady and clear in the tense room. She pointed subtly toward the mahogany study door across the foyer. “It’s in his private office. But you’ll have to go through me to get to these children.”

Andrew stared at Clara in absolute disbelief. Only minutes ago, he had been screaming at her, firing her, treating her like a piece of disposable trash. Now, here she was, standing between a violent criminal and his family, risking her life while he stood paralyzed by fear. A profound, crushing wave of shame washed over Andrew, instantly stripping away years of arrogant armor.

The intruder hesitated for a fraction of a second, thrown off balance by the maid’s complete lack of fear. He sneered, lifting the iron poker higher. “Brave words for a servant. Let’s see how brave you look when— AGH!”

Before the man could finish his sentence, Andrew snapped out of his paralysis. Driven by a sudden, desperate surge of protective fury—inspired entirely by Clara’s fearless stance—Andrew lunged forward. He didn't use a weapon; he used his raw, pent-up weight, tackling the intruder around the waist with the force of a desperate father.

The two men crashed hard against the polished marble floor, the iron poker clattering loudly away across the tiles. Eleanor screamed, covering her mouth with her hands as they grappled violently on the ground.

“Clara! Take the boys!” Andrew roared straining against the intruder, who was thrashing wildly beneath him, trying to land a punishing blow.

Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed Julian and Leo by their hands, turning to run back down the service hallway, but stopped when she saw Eleanor paralyzed with shock. Without missing a beat, Clara reached out with her free hand, grabbing Eleanor’s trembling wrist with a firm, commanding grip.

“Run! Now!” Clara ordered, her voice leaving no room for argument.

Stunned, stripped of her social superiority and elite veneer, Eleanor obeyed the maid. Together, the mother, the maid, and the two twin boys bolted down the dark corridor, leaving the brutal struggle behind them in the grand foyer.
