Chapter 8 - The Inner Sanctum

The acrid smell of smoke filled the damp catacombs as Detective Miller kept his service weapon firmly trained on Dr. Marcus. The physician stood frozen, his hands trembling in the air above his head, all pretense of professional calm entirely stripped away.
“Turn around, put your hands behind your back, and interlace your fingers,” Miller ordered, his voice like grinding stone.
Marcus slowly complied, his eyes darting frantically toward Clara.
Clara tried to wrench her wrist out of eight-year-old Leo’s grip, her manicured nails scratching desperately against his sleeve, but the boy held fast with an ironclad fury that belied his small stature.
“Let go of me, you little monster!” Clara shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as the smoke grew thicker around them. “You have no idea what kind of danger you’ve put us all in! Your uncle won't let you get away with this!”
“Uncle Richard isn't here to save you anymore,” Leo retorted coldly, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity. He shoved her hard toward Detective Miller, who expertly grabbed her upper arm and slammed her handcuffs down with a sharp, metallic click.
“Good job, kid,” Miller muttered, keeping a watchful eye on both captives as the fire near the storage crates began to die down into smoldering embers, thanks to an automatic overhead sprinkler pipe that had finally burst from the heat. “Now, let’s go find your mother before the whole place floods.”
Leo didn’t wait for a second invitation. He turned away from the captives and sprinted toward the narrow iron-reinforced door at the back of the chamber—the inner sanctum where the gurney had been partially concealed.
The heavy door was unlocked. Leo pushed it open, stepping into a small, windowless alcove lined with medical monitors and oxygen tanks.
In the center of the room sat a steel medical gurney. Bound tightly to the mattress with heavy leather straps was a woman with blonde hair matching Clara’s, her mouth sealed with thick silver duct tape, her tear-filled eyes wide with sheer terror and overwhelming relief as the door swung open.
“Mom!” Leo cried out, his voice breaking as the last wall of restraint shattered inside him. He rushed forward, dropping his brass poker to the floor with a loud clang.
The woman let out a muffled, desperate sob, thrashing gently against her restraints as Leo frantically began peeling the heavy adhesive tape away from her mouth.
As the tape tore free with a sharp ripping sound, the woman gasped deeply, pulling air into her starved lungs before whispering his name with a cracked, breathless voice:
“Leo... oh, my sweet boy...”
Before Leo could untie the leather strap across her chest, a sudden, blinding flash of light filled the small alcove, followed by the heavy, ominous sound of a shotgun cocking right behind them in the doorway.

“Step away from the gurney, Leo,” Richard’s voice rang out, cold, flat, and utterly devoid of any human mercy, as the barrel of a hunting rifle pressed firmly against the back of Detective Miller’s neck.
