Chapter 13 - The Red Countdown

The blinking red numbers on the digital control pad inside the silver briefcase pulsed rhythmically against the damp stone walls of the underground cistern.

03:45... 03:44... 03:43...

Detective Miller’s eyes widened in sudden horror as he recognized the interface layout. “That’s a structural demolition detonator! He’s rigged the entire foundation pillars of St. Jude’s Church to blow!”

“Drop the weapon, Detective, and step away from the crates,” Monsignor Thomas commanded, his voice remaining terrifyingly calm as his thumb hovered just inches above the master override key on the console. “If you shoot me, or if anyone attempts to interfere with this transmission, the remote signal routes directly to the secondary charges located beneath the main city water reservoir. A thousand tons of limestone will collapse the entire north district by nightfall.”

Clara began to sob uncontrollably, sliding down the wet concrete wall in absolute despair. Richard stared at the priest in sheer disbelief, realizing too late that they were never meant to survive this operation either.

“You’re going to kill hundreds of innocent people just to cover your tracks?” Miller demanded, his finger tightening on the trigger of his service pistol, torn between executing justice and saving the city.

“Collateral damage, Miller. History is written by the survivors, not the casualties,” Thomas replied smoothly.

Leo didn’t look at the detonator. While the adults were paralyzed by the threat of the countdown timer, his hazel eyes darted rapidly across the surrounding infrastructure. He noticed the heavy rubber fuel line running from a portable diesel generator directly into the main heating vent of the cistern.

Without a word to anyone, Leo dropped low to the ground, slipping silently behind a towering stack of wooden crates filled with gold bullion.

“Leo, stay back!” Sarah whispered frantically, but the boy ignored her entirely, crawling on his hands and knees through the shadows toward the generator.

Thomas kept his eyes fixed on Miller, smiling coldly. “You have approximately two minutes to decide whether you want to die in a hole with these criminals or walk back through that drainage tunnel alone and empty-handed.”

“I’m not walking anywhere with a monster,” Miller said firmly, raising his weapon higher.

Suddenly, a loud hiss echoed from the corner of the cistern, followed by a sharp, metallic screech.

Monsignor Thomas spun around, his calm facade shattering instantly as he saw eight-year-old Leo standing beside the diesel generator, holding the heavy brass poker like a spear directly inside the machine’s spinning intake fan.

With a sickening crunch of metal grinding against metal, the generator sparked violently, sputtered twice, and died completely. The high-intensity work lamps flickered once, twice, and then plunged the entire subterranean cistern into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
