Chapter 14 - Darkness and Justice

Absolute darkness swallowed the underground cistern in an instant as the generator died. The only illumination came from the erratic, fading red glow of the digital countdown timer blinking furiously on the control console.

01:12... 01:11... 01:10...

Chaos erupted in the pitch-black cavern. Shouts of panic echoed off the stone walls as Richard and Clara scrambled blindly in the dark, while Detective Miller immediately hit the wet concrete floor, aiming his firearm toward the last known position of the Monsignor.

“Don’t move! Federal agents!” Miller roared into the darkness.

A sudden flash of light illuminated the room as Monsignor Thomas fired a heavy-caliber pistol blindly into the air, the deafening gunshot ringing painfully close to Leo’s ears.

“You little rat!” Thomas yelled, his voice laced with frantic rage as he lunged toward the control pad to manually trigger the detonator before the power died completely.

Leo didn't hesitate. Though his heart hammered violently against his ribs, he remembered every detail of the terrain he had mapped out in the dark. He darted forward low to the ground, using his small frame to slip beneath the main steel table just as Thomas’s polished leather shoes clicked frantically across the concrete floor.

Reaching up from the shadows, Leo grabbed the heavy brass poker with both hands and swung it upward with all his remaining strength, striking the Monsignor squarely behind the knees.

Thomas let out a sharp cry of pain, his legs buckling instantly beneath him. He crashed hard onto the concrete floor, his head colliding heavily with the corner of an open steel crate filled with gold bars.

The silver briefcase slipped from his grasp, sliding across the wet floor and coming to a sudden stop right against Detective Miller’s heavy boots.

Miller lunged forward in the dark, pressing his knee firmly into the fallen priest’s back while slapping a pair of heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists with practiced, lightning-fast precision.

“Detonator secured! The timer is frozen!” Miller shouted triumphantly over the echoes of the dark cavern, pressing the manual override code into the keypad.

The red blinking numbers stopped dead at 00:14.

A collective, shuddering sigh of relief swept through the group. Sarah rushed frantically through the dark, calling out his name until her hands finally found Leo’s small, trembling shoulders. She pulled him into her arms, burying her face in his messy light brown hair as tears of pure joy streamed down her face.

“You did it, my brave, brilliant boy... it’s over,” she whispered, holding him tighter than she ever had before.

Above them, the distant, muffled sound of heavy municipal sirens began to wail, signaling the arrival of federal backup and city rescue units at the courtyard entrance of St. Jude’s.

Yet, as Detective Miller hauled the handcuffed Monsignor to his feet, a heavy shadow fell across the exit tunnel, revealing one final, chilling figure waiting in the gloom.
