Chapter 10 - The Empty Vault

The word empty seemed to suck all the remaining oxygen straight out of the subterranean chamber. Detective Miller froze, his knee still pinning a handcuffed Richard to the concrete floor. Sarah pulled Leo tighter against her chest, her breathing hitching in sudden, renewed terror.

“What do you mean, the vault is empty?” Miller demanded, standing up slowly while keeping a wary eye on Richard, who let out a sudden, dark, blood-curdling laugh from the floor.

“You fools,” Richard choked out, coughing up a mixture of dust and blood as he grinned up at the ceiling with manic satisfaction. “You thought my wife and I were the apex predators in this operation? We were just middle management. The real foundation of St. Jude’s was built on something far older and far darker than simple insurance scams.”

The lead uniformed officer rushed forward, holding up a shattered brass keycard and a bloodstained ledger book.

“Sir, look at this,” the officer panted, handing the leather-bound book to Miller. “We checked the hidden sub-basement beneath the altar dais—the one listed on the original 19th-century architectural blueprints as a secure archives room. The heavy steel vault door was blown off its hinges from the inside.”

Leo stepped away from his mother for a moment, his hazel eyes narrowing as he stared at the open ledger in Miller’s hands.

“What was stored in that vault?” Leo asked, his voice cutting through the heavy tension in the room like a sharp blade.

Miller flicked open the weathered pages of the ledger, his weathered face draining of color as his eyes scanned the handwritten entries. The names listed inside weren’t just local businessmen or corrupt doctors; they were high-ranking politicians, international financiers, and prominent church officials—all tied to massive, untraceable offshore accounts routed directly through the St. Jude’s parish charity fund.

“It wasn't money,” Miller whispered, horror dawning in his eyes. “It was leverage. Decades of blackmail documents, confessionals, and hidden assets belonging to the most powerful syndicate in the state.”

“And you just played right into their hands by arresting us,” Richard laughed hysterically, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls. “The real mastermind didn’t even attend the funeral today. They were too busy cleaning out the safety deposit boxes while you were all distracted by a ten-year-old boy with a hammer.”

Sarah gently grabbed Leo’s shoulder, pulling him back toward her. “We have to get out of here, Leo. Now. If they cleared the vault, that means the primary extraction team is already moving the remaining cargo.”

“What cargo, Mom?” Leo asked, looking up into her pale, terrified face. “What else are they hiding down here?”

Before Sarah could answer, a deep, rhythmic mechanical rumbling shook the entire foundation of the church. Dust and small pebbles rained down from the vaulted stone ceiling as the main exit stairway behind them suddenly collapsed into a heap of rubble, sealing the underground catacombs completely off from the world above.
