Chapter 9 - The Digital Ghost

The blue light of the smartphone screen illuminated Leo’s serious, unblinking eyes as he held the device out toward Agent Marcus Vance. The green verification badge blinked steadily, displaying Arthur Vance’s primary administrator profile with full Level 5 system credentials.

Agent Vance stared at the phone in stunned silence for a long moment before letting out a sharp, breathless laugh of disbelief. "An eight-year-old boy just bypassed the highest corporate security protocol in the state using his father's breakfast biometric cache."

"Arthur was never as careful as he thought he was," Clara said, stepping protectively beside Leo as she shouldered her briefcase. She looked back at Sarah, who was leaning against the side of the sedan, still pale from her ordeal in the trunk. "Sarah, you need to go with the medical transport to a secure federal safehouse. Let us handle the office archive."

"I am not hiding anymore," Sarah replied, her voice steady and resolute despite the physical toll of the night. She straightened the collar of her mud-stained hospital gown. "Julian targeted my medical care to cover his tracks. My family is in the crosshairs, and I am going with you."

Agent Vance nodded slowly, recognizing the fierce determination in her eyes. He tapped his shoulder radio, barking sharp orders to his tactical team. "Secure two transport vehicles. We are moving downtown to the Sterling & Vance headquarters immediately. Full lockdown protocol. No one enters or leaves the building until we have the physical trust deeds."

Within minutes, the convoy tore out of the hospital parking garage, sirens muted in favor of stealth as they cut through the rain-slicked streets of the downtown financial district. The city towered above them like a canyon of glass and steel, its corporate skyscrapers glowing with cold, indifferent lights against the stormy midnight sky.

When the SUVs pulled up to the towering monolith of the Sterling & Vance building, the plaza was eerily deserted. Yellow police tape fluttered in the wind across the grand revolving doors, and two SEC audit vans sat idling near the loading dock.

As the team piled out of the vehicles, Clara checked her watch. 1:14 AM.

"Julian’s offshore servers in Zurich update their ledger synchronizations at exactly 2:00 AM," Clara warned, her heels clicking rapidly against the granite steps as they approached the side security entrance. "If he executes the final asset transfer before we secure the physical master deeds, the trust will dissolve into untraceable cryptocurrency within forty-eight hours."

They reached the heavy steel security door. A retinal scanner and a numeric keypad flashed red in the darkness, demanding biometric authentication.

Leo stepped forward without hesitation. He reached up, pressing Arthur’s smartphone flat against the glass scanner lens while simultaneously holding the device's camera module up to capture his own thumbprint layered over the master override profile his father had synced to the family cloud.

The security panel buzzed once, twice—then flashed a brilliant, welcoming green.

The heavy steel door clicked and slowly swung inward, revealing a dark, silent corridor lined with marble pillars and security cameras that had already been disabled by the federal tactical team inside.

"In here," Agent Vance whispered, drawing his sidearm as he led the way into the labyrinthine depths of the corporate headquarters.

They navigated the polished hallways in total silence, passing rows of empty mahogany offices belonging to partners who were currently sitting in federal holding cells. They reached the executive elevator bank, bypassed the locked controls using Leo’s administrative override, and descended three floors below ground level—straight into the secure vault housing the firm’s historical master records.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.

Standing in the center of the brightly lit subterranean vault, leaning casually against a shelf of leather-bound ledgers, was a man holding a briefcase and smoking an expensive cigar.

He turned around slowly, blowing a thin ring of blue smoke into the air. His dark hair was slightly graying at the temples, his face bearing an uncanny, haunting resemblance to Arthur, yet hardened by years of ruthless ambition.

It was Julian Vance.
