Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ballroom

The rhythmic click of heavy boots against the polished marble floor broke the suffocating silence of the Grandview Ballroom. The three men in uniform were not security guards; they were federal marshals, their badges gleaming coldly under the opulent chandeliers. The murmurs of the wealthy elite swelled into a chaotic wave of panic and whispers, but Arthur Vance remained frozen in place, his tailored dark blue suit suddenly feeling like a straitjacket.
Arthur’s gaze darted from the approaching marshals back to his son, Leo, who still stood unflinchingly beside Clara. The eight-year-old boy had not released his grip on the smartphone, his thumb resting casually over the screen where the digital paper trail of embezzlement and betrayal remained frozen in bright white light.
"Arthur Vance," the lead marshal spoke, his voice deep and devoid of emotion. "You are coming with us. Do not make this difficult."
"This is a mistake," Arthur finally managed to choke out, taking a frantic step backward. He looked wildly around the room for an ally among the sea of faces that had once praised his business acumen, but every single guest had retreated several paces, desperate to distance themselves from his collapsing empire. "Clara, you are my sister. You cannot do this to our family name."
"Our family name was something you traded away years ago, Arthur," Clara replied smoothly, stepping forward while keeping her hand protectively on Leo’s shoulder. She raised the thick leather folio of legal documents just enough for him to see the federal seals stamped across the top pages. "You thought because I was overseas handling European acquisitions that I wouldn't notice the systematic draining of the trust funds. You were arrogant."
"Dad, it's over," Leo added softly, his small chest rising and falling with steady, natural breaths. The boy looked up at his father with a maturity that broke something fragile inside Arthur’s chest. "You spent the money meant for Mom's medical care on her."
Leo cast a sideways glance at the blonde woman in the pink evening dress, who was already frantically backing toward the service exits, trying to dissolve into the panicked crowd. Arthur lunged forward to stop her, but a heavy hand landed squarely on his shoulder, halting him in his tracks.
"Stay where you are, Mr. Vance," the marshal commanded, clicking handcuffs into place with a sharp, metallic snap that echoed through the vast hall.
As the cold steel clamped around his wrists, Arthur realized the true extent of his miscalculation. He had underestimated his wife’s foresight, his sister’s legal brilliance, and, most damning of all, his own son’s unwavering loyalty.
"Take him out through the side entrance," Clara instructed the marshals, her voice completely devoid of pity. "We have a deposition waiting at the district court in twenty minutes."
Arthur was dragged backward toward the service corridor, his eyes locked on Leo until the heavy mahogany doors blocked his view. The room fell entirely silent once more, save for the hum of the air conditioning.
Clara knelt down to eye level with Leo, offering a rare, gentle smile. "You did brilliantly, sweetheart."
Leo nodded slowly, pocketing the smartphone. "Is Mom going to be safe now?"

Before Clara could answer, her own phone buzzed violently in her blazer pocket. She pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and her face went completely pale.
