Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silk

The heavy crystal chandeliers of the Grandview Ballroom cast a brilliant, merciless glare across the polished marble floor. Waltz music drifted softly through the air, ignored by the sea of affluent guests exchanging hollow pleasantries. At the center of the room, Arthur Vance spun the blonde woman in the pink evening dress with practiced elegance. His dark hair was meticulously styled, his trimmed beard catching the amber light, and his dark blue suit bespoke a man who believed his world was entirely secure.
Then, eight-year-old Leo stepped onto the dance floor. The boy’s light brown hair fell neatly across his forehead, and his miniature light blue suit and silk bow tie felt like armor he was too small to carry. He did not cry. He did not scream. He simply stood before his father with a quiet, devastating stillness that cut through the music.
"Dad, why is she wearing mom's anniversary dress?" Leo’s voice was soft, cutting effortlessly through the ambient noise of the gala.
Arthur froze mid-step. The color drained instantly from his face as his eyes darted from his son to the murmuring crowd surrounding them. He let go of the blonde woman’s hand as if it had turned to hot iron, his chest heaving under his tailored jacket.
"Leo, stay out of this," Arthur hissed, his voice trembling despite his attempt at authority. "You don't understand."
"I understand enough," Leo replied, his young face devoid of the confusion a child should feel.
He raised his right hand. Clutched tightly in his small palm was his father’s smartphone. The screen illuminated his serious, unblinking eyes with a cold, blue light, displaying rows of encrypted hotel reservations booked under a dummy corporation.
"I saved everything," Leo said, his tone chillingly level.
Before Arthur could lunge forward to snatch the device, a figure stepped out from the shadows of the towering marble pillars. It was Sarah, Arthur’s wife and Leo’s mother, though she was absent from the room. Stepping forward in her place was a woman in a sharp white blazer trimmed with black lace—Clara Vance, Arthur’s formidable corporate attorney and estranged sister, who had just returned from a clandestine midnight flight.
Clara stepped directly behind Leo, resting a steadying hand on the boy’s small shoulder. She held a thick leather-bound folio of legal documents, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, elegant knot.
"Do you think my lawyer already has the full file?" Clara asked, her voice carrying across the suddenly dead silent ballroom.
Arthur stared at his sister, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly as the terror finally took root in his chest.
Leo looked up at his father one last time, his gaze piercing and absolute. "Mom told me to protect our family. And I just did."

Arthur’s knees buckled slightly as the ballroom doors slammed open, revealing three men in dark uniforms stepping inside.
