Chapter 10 - The Master of the Vault

The heavy scent of Cuban tobacco hung thick in the air of the subterranean vault, clashing sharply with the sterile smell of old parchment and floor wax. Julian Vance did not look like a fugitive living on the run; he looked like a king surveying his treasury. His tailored dark blue suit was immaculate, and a confident, chilling smile played across his lips as he watched Agent Marcus Vance raise his sidearm.
"Put the gun down, Marcus," Julian said smoothly, not even blinking at the barrel of the federal weapon pointed directly at his chest. "If you shoot me, the dead-man switch on my laptop in Zurich will automatically trigger the final liquidation of every corporate account, pension fund, and personal trust linked to this firm—including the medical fund keeping Sarah alive."
Agent Vance froze, his finger hovering over the trigger. He looked back at Clara and Sarah, weighing the catastrophic fallout of Julian’s threat.
"You're already cornered, Julian," Clara stepped forward, shielding Leo behind her white blazer. Her voice was sharp, cutting through the hum of the vault's climate-control system. "The international warrants are active, Interpol has seized your private jet on the Zurich tarmac, and your associates—including Robert and Marcus Sterling—are currently spilling everything to the federal grand jury."
Julian let out a low, amused chuckle, taking a slow puff of his cigar. "My dear sister, you always were an optimist. Robert and Marcus were useful tools, nothing more. They took the calculated risks while I managed the architecture from the shadows. As for the jet in Zurich... did you really think I would fly commercial or leave myself vulnerable on a single aircraft?"
He tapped the side of his expensive leather briefcase resting on the steel table beside him.
"That plane was a decoy designed to draw federal attention away from my actual departure route," Julian continued, his dark eyes locking onto Sarah with a predatory gleam. "And as for the family trust deeds you came down here to find... well, I'm afraid you're a few minutes too late."
Julian reached down, popped the metal latches of his briefcase, and flipped it open.
Inside sat a high-powered industrial shredder, its internal blades still spinning with a faint, high-pitched whir. A flurry of confetti-like paper scraps drifted gently over the edges of the plastic bin below, bearing the unmistakable gold-foil watermark of the Vance Family Trust master deeds.
Sarah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared at the falling paper scraps. All her life’s work, her family's generational legacy, and the legal proof of their innocence were being ground into dust before her eyes.
"No!" Sarah cried out, taking a frantic step forward.
Clara grabbed her sister’s arm, holding her back just as Agent Vance took a half-step closer to Julian, his jaw clenched in fury.
"You just destroyed the only legal instruments proving you stole the funds," Agent Vance growled. "Without those deeds, the digital ledger defaults to the holding corporation—which you legally own."
"Precisely," Julian smiled, tapping the screen of a secure satellite terminal built into the vault's wall. A digital progress bar ticked upward on the monitor: Asset Transfer Synchronization: 89% complete. "In precisely six minutes, the remaining eighty-one million dollars will transfer into an anonymous offshore vault in Geneva. By sunrise, I'll be beyond extradition."
Julian turned his gaze away from the adults, letting his eyes settle for the first time on eight-year-old Leo, who stood quietly near the entrance of the vault, clutching his father's smartphone.
"And as for the boy..." Julian murmured, his tone dropping into a dark, mocking register. "He played a very clever game tonight. Too clever for his own good."
Before anyone could react, Julian reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a small, heavy brass remote control with a blinking red toggle, and pressed it down firmly.

With a deafening mechanical clang, the massive steel vault door behind them slammed shut, sealing them all inside the underground tomb.
