Chapter 5: The Architect of Consequence

The entire boardroom fell dead silent. Several senior board members instinctively stood up out of respect.

"Marcus?" Arthur breathed, his eyes wide. "We weren't expecting you."

"I apologize for the late arrival, Arthur," Marcus said smoothly, taking a seat at the empty head of the table. "I had to handle some family matters upstate. A bicycle repair, among other things."

Kane’s heart did an Olympic-level backflip. His palms grew slick against the podium. Marcus Vance. The reclusive venture titan who owned the majority debt of Apex’s parent conglomerate—the very debt Kane was trying to leverage.

"Mr. Kane and I have met," Marcus said, gesturing for Kane to continue. "Please, Julian. Don't let me interrupt your presentation on redundant human beings."

Kane tried to speak, but his tongue felt like sandpaper. "Mr. Vance... I didn't realize you held a personal stake in the restructuring committee."

"I hold a personal stake in everything that touches lives," Marcus replied, folding his hands on the table. "You see four hundred redundant positions on a ledger. I see four hundred fathers and mothers who teach their kids how to ride bikes on quiet country roads. People who expect drivers to share the road, not run them into the ditch."

The subtle metaphor hit Kane like a physical slap. The board members glanced between the two men, sensing an underlying current of absolute annihilation.

"We aren't closing the Utica plant," Marcus declared quietly. "Instead, we are retooling it for green turbine manufacturing. And as for your asset-stripping firm..." Marcus glanced at his chief counsel. "We are triggering our debt-covenant buyout. Effective at noon, Mr. Kane, your contract is terminated."
