THE BOY ON WILLOW ROAD

Marcus walked over to the window overlooking the silent factory floor. "I reviewed your quarterly report, Julian. You redirected two million dollars of projected corporate surplus directly into the workers' pension and child education funds."

Kane swallowed, his old corporate instincts bracing for a reprimand, before he caught himself. "It was the right thing to do, Mr. Vance. The efficiency gains came from their sweat. The ledger should reflect that."

Marcus turned around. A rare, broad smile broke across the older man’s face.

"I agree," Marcus said. "Which is why the board of trustees has unanimously voted to name you the permanent Managing Director of Vance Sustainable Infrastructure."

Kane froze. "Mr. Vance... after everything that happened on Willow Road... after the way I acted..."

"On Willow Road, you were a man driving blind," Marcus said gently. "Today, you are a man who looks out for others on the road. That is the only kind of leader this company will ever hire."

Leo walked up to Kane and extended his right hand.

Kane looked at the young boy’s hand—clean, strong, and open. He remembered the boy falling into the ditch, the cruel mockery he had thrown from his car window, and the grace that had been offered to him when he deserved it least.

Kane took Leo’s hand and shook it with deep, reverent gratitude.
