THE BOY ON WILLOW ROAD / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15: The Open Road

The sun was dipping low over the rolling meadows of upstate New York, casting long, golden shadows across the asphalt of Willow Road.

A brand-new, beautifully tuned steel bicycle leaned against the wooden fence at the crossroads.

A hundred yards down the lane, Leo was sprinting through the green grass, catching a high fly ball thrown by Julian Kane, who laughed loudly as the boy made a diving catch into the soft clover.

Marcus Vance sat on the tailgate of his truck, sipping iced tea from a mason jar, watching them with quiet contentment.

There were no armored convoys blocking the intersection today. There were no speed demons roaring past, oblivious to the fragile lives on the shoulder.

A passing local pickup truck slowed to a crawl as it approached the crossroads, the driver tapping his horn twice in a friendly greeting and waving through the open window. Julian waved back, stepping off the asphalt to give the vehicle plenty of room, before turning back to throw the next pitch to the boy.

Power had met arrogance on this very stretch of road, and instead of destroying it, had chosen to teach it how to heal.

The road was wide enough for everyone, so long as there were people willing to slow down, share the lane, and remember that every life is worth the stop.
