The House We Built

Two years later, on a warm Saturday in June, the hillside overlooking Galena was filled with laughter and sunlight.

The new house was finished—a masterpiece of sustainable architecture built into the living rock of the bluff, featuring timber beams, solar glass, and vast communal gardens where children from the local elementary school came for weekend workshops.

Maya and Chloe, now eight years old, were racing through the clover meadow with their golden retriever, their laughter ringing clear across the valley.

In the center of the terrace stood a long wooden table covered with wild daisies, fresh bread, bowls of garden strawberries, and pitchers of lemonade.

Alexander stood at the head of the table, holding a five-month-old baby boy—Liam—against his chest in a soft linen wrap. He was laughing with the local builders and neighbors who had helped construct the timber frames.

Sloane walked out from the kitchen carrying a wooden bowl of salad. She looked radiant, strong, and at peace, her wedding ring catching the afternoon sun.

She walked up to Alexander, wrapping her arm around his waist. He looked down at her, kissing the crown of her head as Liam slept peacefully against his heartbeat.

Across the lawn, Maya and Chloe came running up the stone steps, their hands covered in garden dirt, holding up a bouquet of wild yellow dandelions.

"Daddy! Mommy! Look what we built in the garden!" Maya shouted, her eyes bright and fearless.

Alexander and Sloane looked at their children, then looked at the home standing solid and true against the green hills.

There were no hollow monuments. There were no gilded cages.

There was only an honest foundation, built with patient hands, weathered by storms, and filled forever with the light of home.
