A Fever in the Night

Before they could leave for Chicago, winter struck the Mississippi valley with a sudden, violent blizzard.

At 2:00 AM on Wednesday, Chloe woke up burning with a 104-degree fever, shivering uncontrollably under her quilts.

The roads out of Galena were completely impassable under three feet of drifting snow. Power lines down the valley had snapped, plunging Prospect Hill into freezing darkness.

Sloane was on the verge of panic, the phantom terror of her own hospitalization flooding back. "The plows won't be here until noon, Alex! If her fever spikes higher—"

"Sloane, look at me," Alexander commanded calmly, setting a battery-powered lantern on the dresser. "We don't need a hospital; we need protocol. I have the emergency pediatric kit Mrs. Gable left."

For the next six hours, Alexander became an unyielding fortress of care.

He started a roaring fire in the craftsman stone hearth using seasoned hardwood from the porch. He carried Chloe down to the living room, stripping her to a single cotton layer, applying cool compresses to her neck and wrists with rhythmic, infinite patience. He administered the correct alternating doses of fever reducers, recording every tenth-of-a-degree change on his phone.

When Chloe cried from the chills, Alexander pulled off his heavy sweater, laid down on the rug beside the hearth, and placed the feverish child directly against his bare chest, using his own steady body heat and heartbeat to regulate her shivering nervous system.

"Daddy's here, little bird," he whispered over and over into her damp hair. "I’ve got you. The storm is outside. We are safe inside."

Sloane sat on the rug beside them, holding Alexander’s hand, watching the powerful corporate titan lying on a wooden floor in the flickering firelight, entirely devoted to the comfort of one small child.

By 7:00 AM, the fever broke. Chloe’s skin cooled, her breathing leveled into deep, healing sleep, her tiny fist clutched tightly in the fabric of Alexander’s shirt.

Sloane leaned down and kissed Alexander’s cheek. "You passed the test, Alex," she whispered.

"It wasn't a test, Sloane," Alexander replied, his eyes tired but radiant with peace. "It's just where I belong."
