Standing Before the Board
On Friday morning, as the Chicago plows cleared the expressways, Alexander and Sloane walked through the double mahogany doors of the Vance Tower boardroom on the 50th floor.
The board members, dressed in dark tailored suits, sat in tense silence. Vincent Sterling sat at the head of the table, an arrogant smirk on his face.
"Alexander, glad you could make it," Vincent said, tapping his Rolex. "We have the resolution prepared to reallocate the green-house funding to commercial retail."
"The resolution is void," Alexander said, taking his seat at the center of the table.
He gestured to Sloane, who stood beside him wearing a tailored charcoal wool blazer, her hair styled with sharp, elegant precision.
"Gentlemen, this is Sloane Callahan," Alexander announced, his voice carrying an unshakeable resonance that commanded the room. "Seven years ago, she developed the proprietary airflow and passive thermal architecture that makes the Millennium Park eco-center structurally viable. She holds the original copyright on those schematics."
Vincent scoffed. "This is an ambush. She was an independent contractor—"
Sloane stepped forward, opening a sleek digital portfolio that projected her dated 2018 blueprints onto the massive wall monitors.
"Under Illinois intellectual property law, the foundational environmental algorithms belong to my independent studio," Sloane said, her voice clear, authoritative, and completely devoid of fear. "If you convert the green-house wing into commercial retail, you violate the core thermal balance of the building, increasing HVAC costs by two hundred percent and voiding the city's sustainability grant. You don't just lose the civic charter, Vincent; you structurally destabilize the upper atrium."
The board members scrambled through their technical binders, murmuring in sudden alarm.
Alexander stood up, leaning his palms on the table. "Sloane Callahan is being appointed Chief Sustainability Officer and Lead Design Partner of Vance Enterprises today. The green-house wing remains. The community education charter remains. If anyone on this board disagrees, my capital partners and I will buy out your shares at par value before the markets close today."
