Chapter 9 - The Collapsing Vault

The floor beneath Chloe’s feet shuddered violently as the secondary charges detonated in rapid succession, tearing through the structural support pillars of the abandoned hangar. Dust, debris, and chunks of rusted concrete rained down from the ceiling like a localized earthquake.

“Get down!” Marcus yelled, lunging forward through the settling smoke to tackle Chloe away from a collapsing stack of heavy iron oil drums that was tipping toward them.

They hit the concrete hard, sliding several feet across the dusty floor as the massive steel barrels crashed down precisely where they had been standing a second earlier.

Through the haze of acrid white smoke, Julian laughed triumphantly, turning toward a hidden blast door cut into the rear wall of the hangar. “You think a federal badge can touch a vault built during the Cold War? Enjoy your tomb, nephew!”

Julian slammed the heavy steel bulkhead door shut behind him, the thick locking mechanisms engaging with a series of loud, mechanical thuds that echoed through the cavernous space.

“Agent Vance! The main support beams are compromised! The whole roof structure is shifting!” one of the tactical agents shouted over the roar of crumbling timber and twisting steel overhead.

Marcus pushed himself up, coughing heavily from the thick dust, and grabbed Chloe by the arm to haul her to her feet. “We need to move, now! That blast triggered a structural collapse!”

“He’s escaping through the underground drainage tunnel beneath the rear bulkhead!” Chloe coughed, wiping soot from her face as she pointed toward the heavy steel door Julian had just sealed. “That tunnel leads directly to the secondary runway on the north side of the airfield!”

“We can’t break that door without heavy cutting charges, and we don't have time!” Marcus yelled, grabbing her by the shoulders as another massive tremor shook the building, causing a section of the corrugated roof to cave inward with a deafening crash of falling metal.

“There’s a utility vent!” Chloe insisted, pulling away and pointing toward a rusted iron grate set low into the side wall near the floor. “It connects to the same drainage system! I saw the architectural schematics when I audited the property holdings last month!”

Marcus didn't hesitate. He signaled two tactical agents to cover them while he dropped to his knees, drawing a heavy combat knife from his tactical vest and wedging the blade beneath the rusted bolts of the vent grate. With a furious grunt, he leveraged the blade, snapping the rusted metal screws one by one until the heavy grate popped free, clattering onto the concrete.

“Go! Go!” Marcus ordered, pushing Chloe headfirst into the dark, narrow metal ductwork.

Chloe scrambled forward on her hands and knees, the sharp edges of the corrugated metal scraping against her white cardigan as the air grew thick with the smell of damp earth and stagnant water. Behind her, she could hear the heavy rumble of the hangar roof finally caving in completely, sealing off the main structure in a cloud of blinding grey debris.

She crawled as fast as she could through the claustrophobic tunnel, the beam of Marcus’s tactical flashlight bouncing off the wet walls just behind her. After what felt like an eternity, a pale circle of grey daylight appeared ahead, blocked only by a rotting wooden slatted cover.

With a final surge of adrenaline, Chloe lunged forward, slamming her shoulder directly into the wooden slats.

The wood splintered instantly, and she burst out of the dark pipe into the open air, tumbling hard onto the wet grass just beyond the airfield perimeter fence.

Marcus emerged right behind her, rolling onto the grass and immediately raising his rifle toward the open tarmac ahead.

The rain was finally starting to fall in heavy, stinging sheets, washing the soot from Chloe’s face as she pushed herself up to her knees. Through the sheets of water, about fifty yards away on the secondary runway, a vintage black helicopter with its rotors already spinning at high speed sat waiting on the tarmac.

And sprinting across the open grass toward the aircraft, looking desperate and disheveled, was Julian Vance.

“He’s reaching the chopper!” Chloe gasped, pointing frantically as Julian pulled open the cabin door of the aircraft.

Marcus leveled his rifle, but the distance and the blinding sheets of rain made a clean shot impossible without risking hitting the fuel tanks.

“We have to stop him!” Chloe yelled, her eyes scanning the edge of the grass field where a row of airport maintenance vehicles sat idling.

Without waiting for Marcus’s permission, Chloe sprinted toward a heavy motorized baggage tractor left parked near the tarmac service road, jumping into the driver’s seat and slamming her foot down on the accelerator.
