Chapter 6 - The Airstrip Pursuit

The static-filled voice crackling over the radio seemed to freeze the air in the clearing. Marcus shoved Eleanor into the back of the second federal cruiser, slamming the door shut with a heavy thud before grabbing his comms unit.
“All units, lock down every perimeter exit toward the municipal airstrip! Do not let Arthur’s transport leave the tarmac!” Marcus barked into the microphone, his eyes darting immediately to Chloe, who was holding the tiny micro-SD card in her palm. “Ms. Vance, get in the front seat of my vehicle right now. We’re moving.”
“I’m coming with you,” Chloe said firmly, not waiting for his permission as she pulled open the passenger door of the surviving federal SUV and climbed inside, pulling her backpack onto her lap.
“This isn't a negotiation, Chloe. Your father is desperate, and a cornered animal is lethal,” Marcus warned as he threw the SUV into reverse, spinning the steering wheel hard to kick up a spray of gravel as they tore out of the safehouse driveway.
“Arthur isn’t running because he’s brave; he’s running because he knows that microcard in my pocket contains the authorization codes to liquidate his entire offshore portfolio,” Chloe replied, her eyes fixed on the twisting asphalt road ahead. “If he reaches that private jet, he vanishes into a non-extradition country, and everything my mother died for becomes completely meaningless.”
The SUV surged forward, accelerating past eighty miles per hour as Marcus navigated the winding country roads that led toward the private municipal airfield on the outskirts of the county. The grey sky above seemed to press down closer to the earth, threatening a heavier downpour that would make visibility on the tarmac nearly impossible.
As they rounded a sharp bend in the highway, the chain-link perimeter fence of the airfield came into view. Beyond the wire, sitting on the wet tarmac beneath the glow of sodium-vapor lights, was a sleek twin-engine private jet with its turbines already whining at high pitch, ready for immediate takeoff.
Parked directly across the access gate was Arthur’s empty luxury sedan, its driver’s door left wide open.
“He’s already inside the perimeter,” Marcus said, slamming on the brakes as the SUV skidded to a halt inches from the chain-link gate.
“Look at the gate control box,” Chloe pointed out, leaning across the center console. “The electronic lock has been bypassed with a manual override cable. He didn't just break in; someone on the airfield ground crew helped him secure clearance.”
Marcus drew his service weapon, checking the magazine with a practiced click before stepping out into the misty air. “Stay inside the vehicle, Chloe. Lock the doors and do not open them for anyone except me.”
Before Chloe could argue, Marcus sprinted toward the bypassed gate, ducking low as he approached the tarmac.
Chloe watched through the shattered windshield as Marcus crossed the open expanse toward the idling jet. The aircraft's landing lights cut a blinding swath through the dense fog, illuminating the gleaming metal fuselage. Suddenly, the jet’s forward stair hatch began to lift hydraulically, sealing the cabin as the engines shrieked into a deafening roar, beginning to taxi slowly down the runway.
“No you don't,” Chloe muttered.
She reached down, opening the glove compartment of the federal SUV. Inside sat a heavy emergency satellite radio unit with an integrated manual frequency tuner. She remembered seeing the exact model specification listed in the airfield maintenance manual she had reviewed during her corporate audits months ago.
Her fingers flew across the keypad, punching in the emergency ground-control override frequency for the municipal airport tower.
“Tower, this is Federal Informant Vance, authorization code Delta-Seven-Niner,” Chloe spoke directly into the handset, her voice steady and commanding. “We have an active fugitive attempting to breach restricted airspace aboard aircraft Lima-Echo-Nine. Override the primary transponder signal and cut fuel feed to the port engine immediately.”
There was a tense, agonizing pause of static over the radio speaker.
Then, a clipped voice responded: “Confirmed, Federal Informant. Activating remote fuel shutoff sequence in three, two, one...”
On the tarmac a few hundred yards away, the right engine of the private jet let out a loud, sputtering cough, followed by a brilliant burst of orange flame that erupted from the turbine housing. The aircraft yawed violently to the right, its nose scraping against the wet concrete before coming to a screeching, smoke-filled halt near the edge of the grass runway.
Chloe exhaled a long, shaky breath, releasing the microphone button.
Suddenly, the passenger side door of the SUV was yanked violently open from the outside, and a cold, heavy object was pressed firmly against the side of Chloe’s temple.
“End of the line, little girl,” a gruff voice growled in her ear.

Chloe froze, turning her head slightly to find a heavily armed man in civilian flight gear smiling grimly down at her.
