Chapter 5 - The Mother’s Substitute

The morning mist seemed to freeze in the air as Eleanor stood over the fallen security chief, her designer heels sinking into the muddy gravel while her hands gripped the 12-gauge shotgun with unnatural familiarity. The pink dress she had worn during the confrontation in the foyer was now torn at the hem and stained with dark grease, but her posture was rigid, devoid of the hysterical panic she had displayed just an hour earlier.

“Eleanor... what are you doing?” Chloe asked, her voice tight as she slowly backed away from the barrel of the gun, her hand brushing against Marcus’s shoulder as the agent struggled to his feet behind her.

“Saving what’s left of our legacy, Chloe, something your pathetic little crusade was about to destroy completely,” Eleanor replied, her voice eerily calm, lacking the manic edge from before. She flicked her gaze toward Marcus, who was cautiously reaching for his service holster. “Don’t even think about it, Agent. One twitch and I blow her head off before your backup can even clear the driveway.”

Marcus froze, his hand hovering inches from his sidearm. “You’re looking at accessory to murder and federal treason, Mrs. Vance. Shooting an unarmed civilian and a federal officer won't save your assets; it will guarantee you spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security penitentiary.”

“Let me enlighten you on a little secret about the Vance family fortune, Agent,” Eleanor laughed, a cold, bitter sound that carried across the quiet clearing. “Arthur didn't build this empire through corporate brilliance or stock market wizardry. He inherited it through blood. And I wasn't just his second wife—I was the one who helped him clean up the mess after his first wife decided to play detective thirty years ago.”

Chloe’s breath hitched in her throat. The words slammed into her mind like a physical blow. She stared at Eleanor, the horrifying realization dawning behind her eyes with brutal clarity.

“You...” Chloe whispered, her voice trembling violently. “You weren’t just Arthur’s partner in crime. You were the one who handed him the statuette.”

“Oh, darling, I didn't just hand it to him; I wiped your mother’s fingerprints off the base so the police report would look foolproof,” Eleanor smiled, her eyes devoid of any human warmth. “Do you really think a man as weak-willed as Arthur could have planned an execution that clean on his own? He’s a parasite, Chloe. I am the host.”

Marcus shifted his weight slightly, trying to find a clear angle to draw his weapon without putting Chloe in the line of fire. “Put the gun down, Eleanor. The perimeter is already secured by secondary units. You’re completely surrounded.”

“Surrounded by incompetent fools who are too blind to see what’s right in front of them!” Eleanor screamed, her composure finally snapping as the adrenaline peaked. Her hands shook violently on the stock of the shotgun, the barrel wavering just an inch to the left.

That single, fraction-of-an-second tremor was all Chloe needed.

Without thinking, Chloe lunged sideways, slamming her shoulder directly into Eleanor’s midsection with all the momentum she could muster. The shotgun roared, discharging a deafening blast into the empty sky above the tree canopy as both women tumbled hard into the gravel.

Marcus didn’t hesitate. He closed the distance in two massive strides, diving onto Eleanor and pinning her arms behind her back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs.

“You little ungrateful bitch!” Eleanor shrieked, thrashing against the gravel as Marcus hauled her to her feet, dragging her toward the rear of the federal vehicle. “You’ll never find the rest of the accounts! Arthur has the master keys hidden where no one will ever look!”

Chloe pushed herself up from the ground, brushing dirt and tiny fragments of gravel off her white cardigan. Her knees were scraped and bleeding, her white sneakers ruined by the mud, but her mind was sharper than it had ever been. She walked over to the open wooden crate where the bronze statuette still rested among the packing materials.

She picked up the small, yellowed photograph of her mother that she had dropped during the scuffle, sliding it carefully into the pocket of her jeans. Then, she reached back into the hollow base of the statuette, her fingers searching the hidden compartment once more.

Beneath where the photograph had been wedged, her fingertips brushed against a small, cold metallic object that hadn't been visible in the dim light of the safehouse driveway. It was a physical micro-SD card, stamped with the logo of a Swiss Swiss-holding bank—the very master key Eleanor had just screamed about.

Chloe pulled the microcard out, holding it up to the pale morning sunlight.

Before she could examine it further, the radio on Marcus’s belt crackled to life, broadcasting a frantic message from the command center back at the estate.
