Chapter 2: The Unmarked Sedan

The black sedan slid to a silent stop directly behind the tow truck, blocking the suburban exit route. The driver's side door clicked open, and Agent Vance stepped out into the bright afternoon sun. He wore a sharp charcoal suit that contrasted sharply with the casual neighborhood vibe, his sunglasses masking his eyes. Vance didn't look at the tow truck driver or the nervous onlookers gathering on the sidewalk. He walked straight toward Officer Miller, who was now sweating profusely under his heavy polyester uniform cap.

Miller stammered, fumbling with the driver's license still clutched in his trembling fingers. "Agent Vance, I didn't realize—this was just a routine municipal ordinance enforcement. The town council requested—"

"Shut up, Miller," Vance interrupted coldly, his voice devoid of any warmth. He turned his attention to Marcus, pulling a small silver key from his pocket and sliding it into the handcuffs. With a soft click, Marcus was free. He rubbed his wrists, stepping back to check the classic blue Chevrolet truck.

"Is the vehicle compromised?" Vance asked Marcus, ignoring Miller entirely.

"Not yet," Marcus replied, his eyes scanning the tow truck’s winch mechanism. "They tried to hook the rear axle. If they had moved it five feet, the tracking device in the chassis would have triggered a local subnet breach."

Miller looked between the two men, panic fully overtaking his professional composure. "What subnet? It's just an old truck belonging to a delinquent taxpayer. The mayor signed the impound order himself."

Vance finally turned his gaze to the local police officer, a grim smile touching the corner of his mouth. "The mayor doesn't own this county, Miller. And neither does the man paying you to make this truck disappear."

Marcus stepped up to the driver's side door of the Chevrolet, pulling a hidden latch beneath the dashboard. A faint click echoed from the engine bay, revealing a secondary compartment.

Vance stepped closer, peering inside the hidden dash. "Did they find the ledger?"

Marcus shook his head slowly, pulling out a sealed manila envelope. "No. But they almost got to the hard drive."
