Chapter 3 - The Scullery Escape

“Run, Julian! Now!” Clara hissed, grabbing her brother’s tuxedo sleeve and hauling him toward the narrow pantry corridor before Richard could round the corner.
They plunged into the suffocating darkness of the estate's subterranean hallways, a labyrinth of stone passages designed centuries ago for servants to move unseen. The air tasted of damp earth, old grease, and cheap lye soap. Julian stumbled twice in his dress shoes, his breathing coming in ragged, panicky gasps that echoed too loudly in the confined space. Clara led with absolute confidence, her fingers trailing along the rough limestone walls to guide them through the pitch-black turns. Behind them, the muffled shouts of Uncle Richard and his armed guards bounced off the low ceilings, growing closer with every echoing boot-step.
“Where are we going?” Julian whispered, his voice cracking with exhaustion as blood stained his pristine white shirt cuffs. “The estate is completely isolated. The gates are locked, and his men control the perimeter.”
“We aren't leaving the estate, Julian. We're going to the vault,” Clara replied evenly, ducking beneath a low-hanging steam pipe without breaking her stride.
Julian froze in the damp darkness, his eyes widening in horror even though Clara couldn't see it. “The vault? Richard keeps armed mercenaries stationed there twenty-four hours a day. It’s suicide!”
“It’s the only place where the physical ledgers are kept,” Clara countered, halting at a heavy iron-banded door disguised as a brick wall. She slid the skeleton key into the rusted keyhole with practiced ease. “Every bribe, every forged signature, every shipping manifest for the weapons trade—it’s all inside. If we go to the police, Richard’s judges will have us executed for treason before dawn. We need undeniable proof that the entire high court can see.”
The heavy lock clicked open with a satisfying, deep thud. Clara pushed the heavy iron door inward, revealing a dimly lit subterranean chamber lined with floor-to-ceiling shelves of heavy leather-bound books and strongboxes.
Suddenly, a cold metal barrel pressed firmly against the back of Clara’s neck.

“End of the line, little niece,” a rasped, cruel voice whispered from the darkness behind them.
