Chapter 1 - The Broken Heirloom “Know your place, maid.”

Lady Eleanor sneered, her crimson gown rustling like dry autumn leaves against the polished marble floor of the grand ballroom.

Clara did not flinch. She kept her brown hair tied back neatly, her grey dress and white apron smoothing against her frame as she adjusted the heavy serving cart.

“Let go of me!” Eleanor shrieked, yanking her leg back in fury after Clara had effortlessly caught her sudden, venomous kick mid-air.

The crystal chandeliers above cast blinding glints of light across the cavernous room, illuminating the sudden, breathless silence of the high-society gala. Clara stepped forward, her posture rigid with an uncanny, royal dignity that terrified the assembled aristocrats. She raised her left hand, exposing the heavy, gleaming golden signet ring bearing the exact profile portrait of the founding Duke of Sterling. Across the room, Lord Julian dropped his crystal flute. Tears carved hot tracks down his pale cheeks as he stared at the metal emblem, his breath hitching into a ragged sob.

“Look closer,” Clara commanded, her voice cutting through the suffocating tension like a razor.

Julian staggered forward, his tuxedo jacket trembling as his knees buckled.

“Sister...” Julian whispered, the word escaping his lips like a dying ghost.

Eleanor stumbled backward, her manicured fingers flying to her throat as the horrifying truth struck the gallery like lightning. This lowly servant girl, beaten and degraded for three long years in the estate’s scullery, was not an orphan from the slums. She was the eldest legitimate heir, presumed dead in a carriage fire that had murdered their parents a decade ago.

Julian reached out with trembling fingers, desperate to touch the ring, but Clara snatched her hand back. Her eyes narrowed into cold, calculating slits as she looked past her weeping brother and onto the balcony above. There, half-hidden in the heavy velvet shadows, stood Uncle Richard. The man who had orchestrated the entire assassination plot now held a silver Derringer pistol aimed squarely at Julian’s chest.
