Chapter 2 - Shadows on the Balcony

“Stay back, Julian, or you die right here,” Clara whispered fiercely, shoving her brother behind her heavy serving cart just as a deafening gunshot shattered the silence.
The bullet sparked off the marble floor inches from Julian’s polished oxfords, sending shards of stone flying into the pristine gowns of the nearby socialites. Panic erupted like a wave of boiling oil. Screams bounced off the vaulted ceilings as guests trampled one another to escape the ballroom doors. Eleanor fell to her knees, her crimson gown stained with spilled wine, utterly paralyzed by the sudden collapse of her privileged world. Clara didn't panic. Her survival instincts, honed through years of scrubbing soot and dodging malicious kicks, took over instantly. She gripped the heavy mahogany serving cart and shoved it hard against the sweeping marble staircase, creating an improvised barricade.
Up on the balcony, Uncle Richard lowered the smoking pistol, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. He had spent ten years consolidating his absolute power over the Sterling estate, bleeding its accounts dry to fund his illegal shipping cartels, and he refused to let a scullery maid tear it all away in a single night.
“You should have stayed in the ash heap where I left you, little niece,” Richard roared, his voice echoing menacingly across the empty hall as he sprinted toward the service stairwell.
Julian clutched Clara’s grey sleeve, his face wet with tears and soot. “Clara... how? We buried you. The carriage... there was nothing left.”
“There was a body,” Clara said coldly, her eyes fixed on the service door. “Just not mine. Richard swapped the manifests the night before. He wanted the title, the estates, and the foreign accounts. He thought breaking my spirit with a maid's uniform would keep me silent forever.”
She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a small, steel skeleton key—the one key Uncle Richard kept chained around his neck every single day. Julian stared at it in stunned disbelief, realizing that his sister hadn't just survived; she had infiltrated their inner sanctum, learning every dark secret, every financial crime, and every conspiracy hidden within the mansion walls.
