Chapter 8 - The Resurrection of Sarah Vance

The blinding beam of the tactical flashlight held Julian and Marcus pinned in place like insects under a microscope. Julian raised a hand to shield his eyes, his boots sinking deeper into the mud as Sarah walked slowly toward them, her leather boots clicking rhythmically against the charred stones of the mill floor. She didn't look like a woman who had spent five years hiding from an international insurance fraud investigation; her coat was immaculate, her blonde hair tied back in a sleek chignon, and a faint, knowing smile played across her lips.

"Sarah?" Marcus breathed, taking an involuntary step forward before catching himself. "We buried you. We sat through the memorial service. Arthur showed us the coroner's report from the wreckage."

Sarah stopped ten feet away, her flashlight beam dipping down to illuminate the mud on their trousers. "Arthur is a master storyteller, Marcus. He needed a dead heir to clear the title on the Canadian timber tracts. And since I was the only one who figured out how he skimmed the pension funds back in twenty-eighty-four, trading my real identity for a Swiss passport felt like a reasonable compromise."

Julian stepped in front of Marcus, his hands held out defensively. "You're working with him. All this time—the restructuring, David's breakout, the SEC audit—it was all a coordinated play to liquidate the final assets and disappear overseas."

"Not disappear, Julian. Evolve," Sarah corrected, her blue eyes flashing with a dangerous intelligence. "The traditional corporate model is dead. Arthur knows it, I know it, and even Thomas figured it out before he locked himself in the East Wing. The only ones who refused to see the writing on the wall were you two."

From behind the massive brick smokestack, a sharp click echoed through the clearing—the unmistakable sound of a rifle bolt sliding into place.

Julian’s heart slammed against his ribs. He didn't need to turn around to know who was standing there.

Thomas stepped out from the shadows of the brickwork, holding a hunting rifle loosely in his right hand, his dark suit jacket soaked through, his expression completely blank. "Sarah’s right, Julian. You can't fight a system that owns the judges, the marshals, and the land beneath your feet. Drop the flash drive."

Marcus glared at his younger cousin, his voice dripping with venom. "You sold us out to save your own skin, Thomas? After everything our father did to put you through school?"

"My father died because he was weak, Marcus," Thomas replied coldly, raising the barrel of the rifle just a fraction of an inch. "Just like yours is about to if you don't hand over that drive."

Julian looked down at the titanium drive in his hand, then up at Sarah, and finally toward the dark tree line where Lily was hidden behind the oak trunk. He slowly closed his fingers around the metal casing, feeling its sharp edges bite into his palm.

"I'm not giving you the drive," Julian said, his voice steady and completely devoid of fear. "Because that drive isn't just a master key. It's an encrypted dead-man's switch programmed to upload every single offshore wire transfer straight to the federal grand jury at midnight."

Sarah’s confident smile vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of genuine panic as she reached into her coat pocket for her phone.
