Chapter 10 - The Abyss Below

Julian lay flat on his stomach at the ragged edge of the newly formed sinkhole, peering down into the pitch-black void where Marcus had vanished. The smell of wet soot and stagnant water drifted up from the depths, thick and suffocating.

"Marcus!" Julian shouted down into the darkness, his voice cracking with panic. "Marcus, answer me! Can you hear me?"

A faint groan echoed from the bottom of the pit, followed by the sound of shifting rubble. "I'm... I'm down here," Marcus’s voice rasped, weak and strained. "My leg... I think it's pinned under a support beam. But I’m alive."

Julian let out a ragged breath, turning his head to look back at the clearing. Thomas stood frozen near the edge of the tree line, the hunting rifle trembling in his grip, his eyes wide with shock as he stared down into the hole. Sarah was nowhere to be seen—she had either fallen into the deeper recesses of the vault or managed to scramble away into the brush during the collapse.

"Thomas! Drop the gun and help me pull him out," Julian commanded, his voice sharp and absolute.

Thomas hesitated, looking from the rifle in his hands to the gaping black hole in the earth. For a second, a conflict flickered across his young face—the fear of Arthur’s wrath warring with the sudden realization that they were all trapped in a collapsing web of lies. Slowly, deliberately, Thomas lowered the muzzle of the rifle and let it drop into the mud. He hurried over to the edge, dropping to his knees beside Julian.

"Give me your belt," Thomas said, already unbuckling his own leather strap. "We can loop it around that exposed rebar and lower a makeshift pulley down to him."

Working with frantic efficiency, the two cousins tied their belts together, creating a makeshift tether that dropped ten feet down into the subterranean darkness. Julian gripped the leather tightly, bracing his boots against a stable concrete footing, while Thomas fed the strap downward.

"Marcus, grab the belt!" Julian shouted down into the void. "Wrap it around your good arm and hold on!"

A moment later, a sharp tug vibrated through the leather strap. Julian braced his core, his muscles screaming as he pulled with everything he had, while Thomas reached over to haul the slack. Inch by inch, Marcus’s head and shoulders broke the surface of the pit, covered in black soot and wet mud, his face contorted in pain.

With a final, desperate heave, Julian and Thomas dragged Marcus over the lip of the sinkhole and onto the solid ground of the clearing. Marcus collapsed instantly, clutching his right leg where his trouser leg was torn and stained with dark blood.

"We need to get out of here," Marcus panted, staring up through the rain at the darkening sky. "The whole foundation is rotting away. If we stay another five minutes, this entire site is going to collapse into the lake."

Julian nodded grimly, helping Marcus to his feet and draping his brother's arm over his shoulder. He turned to Thomas, who was standing silently over the edge of the pit, staring down into the darkness with a look of absolute horror.

"What is it, Thomas?" Julian asked, his voice tightening.

Thomas pointed a trembling finger down into the illuminated beam of his fallen flashlight, which had lodged in a crevice twenty feet below. Reflected in the stagnant water at the bottom of the vault wasn't just rubble—it was a row of rotting wooden crates stamped with the official insignia of the federal government, dating back twenty-five years.

And resting on top of the crates was a leather briefcase bearing Arthur Sterling’s personal monogram.
