Chapter 1 - The Broken Treaty

The polished mahogany floorboards of the Sterling-Vance estate hallway still seemed to vibrate from the sudden chaos. Julian Vance stood frozen, his chest heaving beneath his black suit, his dark shirt absorbing the dim light of the crystal chandelier overhead. Across the corridor, his father-in-law, Arthur Sterling, remained seated in the high-backed leather chair, his grey hair neatly parted, his silk red tie hanging motionless against his dark suit jacket. Arthur did not blink. He merely watched Julian with cold, calculating eyes, refusing to acknowledge the panic swirling around them.

In Julian’s arms, six-year-old Lily clung to his neck, her pink dress smudged with dust from her fall, her beige cardigan slipping off one trembling shoulder. Her tears had slowed, but her voice still carried the raw tremor of a child who had witnessed something she was never meant to see.

"You heard her to draw me out?" Julian’s voice cut through the cavernous space, sharp and laced with a restrained fury that vibrated in every syllable. He took a half-step forward, his gaze locked onto the older man. "Who’d you send in after I left?"

Arthur slowly crossed one leg over the other, the fabric of his trousers whispering against the leather. A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corners of his mouth. "You always were paranoid, Julian. A meeting room is a fragile place. Sometimes, a father needs to speak with his son without an ambitious son-in-law hovering over the minutes."

"Don't play games with me, Arthur," Julian snapped, his grip tightening instinctively around Lily as the weight of the realization crushed his lungs. "The board meeting was locked. Only three people had the security codes to override the digital locks remotely. Me, you, and Thomas. And Thomas was sitting right beside me until you had Lily stage that fall in the corridor to pull me away!"

Arthur tilted his head, his expression shifting from indifference to a quiet, chilling amusement. "Thomas is a bright boy, but he lacks stamina. He needed to sign the restructuring agreement before the SEC audit hit tomorrow morning. You would have fought it. You always fight for the losing side of history."

"The restructuring gives away sixty percent of the voting shares to an offshore shell company!" Julian shouted, taking another aggressive stride toward the chair. "You didn't restructure the company, Arthur—you liquidated it. You sold my daughter's inheritance to people whose names aren't even on the corporate registry!"

Arthur raised a single, manicured hand, gesturing dismissively toward the grand staircase where distant shouting echoed through the wing. "Keep your voice down, Julian. Your precious company was bleeding dry anyway. I merely orchestrated a painless amputation."

Before Julian could lunge forward to grab the old man by his red silk tie, the heavy oak doors at the far end of the grand hallway flew off their hydraulic hinges with a deafening crash, revealing a towering silhouette framed by the blinding flash of an approaching thunderstorm.
