Chapter 9: The Trap Closes

While Julian and Clara were securing their alliance in Milwaukee, back in Chicago, Eleanor Sterling was facing a crisis of an entirely different magnitude. The board of directors had called an emergency session at the corporate headquarters after three major institutional investors suddenly pulled their funding following an anonymous tip regarding the Sterling Corporation's questionable land acquisitions. Eleanor sat at the head of the boardroom table, her grey updo slightly disheveled for the first time in forty years, her eyes sweeping over the pale, panicked faces of her vice presidents. "This is a temporary maneuver by a disgruntled competitor," Eleanor announced, her voice cutting through the murmurs like glass. "Marcus Vance is handling the regulatory fallout as we speak." Before anyone could respond, the heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud, echoing bang. It wasn't Marcus Vance who walked into the room; it was two federal marshals in dark tactical vests, accompanied by a lean, middle-aged man holding a thick sheaf of legal papers bearing the federal seal. "Mrs. Eleanor Sterling?" the lead marshal asked, his voice echoing off the vaulted glass ceiling. "You are hereby served with a federal grand jury subpoena and a warrant to seize all corporate financial ledgers, property deeds, and internal communications effective immediately." Gasps echoed around the mahogany table as board members scrambled backward away from Eleanor as if she were carrying a contagious disease. Eleanor did not blink; she simply rose slowly from her chair, her posture stiff as a steel rod, her cold, unyielding glare locked onto the federal marshal. "You are making a catastrophic mistake," she murmured, her voice dripping with venom. "I built this city, and I will tear it down before I let a bureaucrat touch my legacy." The marshal remained unimpressed, gesturing to the other agents to begin boxing up the servers and hard drives on the side credenzas. The Sterling empire was officially bleeding out in broad daylight.
