Chapter 4: The Vanguard of Retaliation

Back in the city, Eleanor Sterling sat behind an executive mahogany desk that spanned twelve feet of polished wood, her grey updo immaculate, her pearls gleaming under the sharp light of a banker’s lamp. Across from her sat Marcus Vance, the family's chief legal counsel, a man whose tailored grey suit cost more than most people's cars. The atmosphere in the high-rise office was freezing, entirely devoid of human warmth, dominated by the rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner. "Find them, Marcus," Eleanor said quietly, her voice devoid of emotion, carrying the terrifying weight of absolute authority. "I don't care what shell companies Julian is hiding behind, and I don't care what romantic notions he has about playing the knight in shining armor. That child belongs to the Sterling Corporation's future." Marcus adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his expression uneasy as he flipped open a leather-bound folder. "Mrs. Sterling, Julian liquidated three corporate accounts yesterday afternoon before the banquet even concluded. He has scrubbed his digital footprint cleaner than a federal witness protection case." Eleanor’s eyes narrowed into cold, calculating slits, and her manicured fingernails tapped a sharp, rhythmic tattoo against the polished wood of her desk. "Julian thinks he can cut off his inheritance and live like a commoner? Let him try," she hissed softly. "Freeze every personal credit card he holds, block his corporate voting shares, and alert our contacts at the Department of Health. If Clara so much as walks into a public clinic for a prenatal checkup, I want an alert on my desk within five minutes." Marcus nodded slowly, knowing better than to argue with the matriarch whose wrath was legendary in Chicago’s financial circles. He gathered his papers and hurried out of the office, leaving Eleanor alone with her thoughts and her burning desire to reclaim what she considered her rightful legacy, no matter who had to be crushed in the process.
