Chapter 13: The Uninvited Guest

Three days later, Clara was resting in a private recovery suite on the third floor of the hospital, holding her sleeping baby girl against her chest while Julian stepped out to grab fresh coffee from the cafeteria down the hall. The room was peaceful, the afternoon sun streaming through the vertical blinds to cast warm stripes across the clean white sheets. Suddenly, the soft click of the door unlatching made Clara look up from her child. Standing in the doorway was not Julian, but Eleanor Sterling. The matriarch looked older, her grey updo slightly unraveled, her beige pantsuit wrinkled as if she had slept in it for days, but her eyes still burned with that same terrifying, glacial intensity. She stepped into the room without an invitation, closing the door softly behind her, her gaze locking instantly onto the infant in Clara's arms. "You think you've won, don't you?" Eleanor whispered, her voice dangerously low as she walked slowly toward the bed. Clara did not flinch; she pulled her baby closer to her chest, her chin lifting with a quiet, fierce dignity that caught Eleanor off guard. "I know we've won, Eleanor," Clara replied steadily, her voice calm and devoid of fear. "Your company is being liquidated by the federal government, your board has abandoned you, and you have no legal hold over this child." Eleanor stopped at the foot of the bed, her hands trembling slightly despite her best efforts to maintain her composure. "You have no idea what it takes to survive in this world, Clara. Julian is weak because of you," Eleanor hissed, taking another step forward. Before Eleanor could reach the side of the bed, the door swung open violently with a loud crash against the wall. Julian stood in the doorway, two hot cups of coffee falling from his hands to smash against the linoleum floor as he saw his mother standing over the woman he loved.
