Chapter 11: The Race against the Clock

The drive to the regional medical center in Kenosha was a blur of flashing taillights and white-knuckled steering. Clara gripped the passenger-side grab handle, her breathing controlled and rhythmic as Julian pushed the sedan well above the speed limit on the dark, empty stretch of highway. The contractions were coming every three minutes now, sharp and demanding, reminding them both that nature cared nothing for corporate boardrooms or federal indictments. Julian’s phone buzzed incessantly in the center console—first a missed call from Marcus Vance, then an encrypted notification from a burner line, and finally a direct call from Eleanor herself. Julian reached over and hit the power button on the phone, turning it off completely and throwing it into the back seat, cutting off the last remaining tether to his past life. "We’re five minutes away, Clara. Just breathe with me," Julian said, his voice steady and calm, masking the sheer terror pounding in his chest. As they pulled up to the emergency room entrance of the Kenosha medical center, an intake nurse rushed out with a wheelchair, having noticed Clara’s distress through the passenger window. Julian jumped out of the car, leaving the keys with a bewildered parking attendant, and helped Clara transfer into the wheelchair with gentle, practiced care. The bright fluorescent lights of the hospital lobby felt sterile and blinding after weeks of dim safe houses and flickering campfires, but to Clara, they were the lights of civilization and safety. As the nursing staff wheeled her down the polished corridors toward the maternity ward, Julian held tightly to the handle of the black duffel bag in one hand while keeping his other hand firmly planted on Clara’s shoulder, refusing to leave her side for even a single second.
